摘要:
The Neutron Diffraction Commission welcomes the publication ofNeutron Newsby Gordon and Breach. We hope it will be as successful as Synchrotron Radiation News. It is imperative that the neutron scattering community reach as wide a readership as possible. As with synchrotron radiation, where non-diffrdction phenomena are widkly utilized, there are many non-diffraction or non-scattering uses for neutrons, such as neutron activation analysis, and neutron radiography. It is important to convince other scientists and nonscientists too, of the uniqueness and usefulness of neutron sources—steady-state as well as pulsed sources.

摘要:
A joint Brookhaven National Laboratory-Oak Ridge National Laboratory International Workshop on Neutron Scattering Instrumentation was held at the Garden Plaza Hotel in Oak Ridge from June 5–7, 1989. The workshop, which was co-Ehaired by John Axe (BNL) and John Hayter (ORNL), was sponsored by the Division of Materials Sciences of the US Department of Energy. About 50 neutron scattering instrumentation experts from 19 laboratories in 8 countries attended. The purpose of the workshop was to review the status and limitations of current neutron scattering instrumentation, to discuss andexchange plansfor new instruments, and to stimulate thinking about innovative instrumentation concepts to meet the needs of the US neutron scattering community into the 1990's and beyond. In particular, the findings of the workshop will be used in planning instrument initiatives at the current high-flux reactors HFBR and HFIR and, in the long term, at the proposed Advanced Neutron Source (ANS) at Oak Ridge.

摘要:
On June 3, 1989, about 165 friends and coworkers gathered at Brookhaven National Laboratory to attend a Symposium and Dinner to honor Gen Shirane on the occasion of his sixty-fifth birthday. The affair was not as hapless as might have been anticipated, considering that Steve Shapiro and I had a hand in its organizatib. Even Gen, who resolutely opposed the whole idea from the beginning, warmed to the occasion as the day progressed.

摘要:
The National Institute of Standards and Technology Reactor (NBSR) is a 20 MW research reactor located at the Gaithersburg, MD site, and has been in operation since 1969. In the reactor hall, there are 26 experimental facilities which are used for materials science, chemical analysis, nondestructive evaluation, neutron standards work, and irradiations. It is used by other divisions within the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), by other government agencies and laboratories, and by researchers from universities and industry. In 1988, over 350 scientists and engineers participated in research using the reactor facilities.

摘要:
ISIS, the most powerful source of pulsed neutrons for condensed matter research in the world, is situated at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in England. The laboratory is located on the edge of the Ferkshire Downs in rural Oxfordshire. It is close to Harwell, the site of earlier neutron sources of both pulsed (electron linac) and steady state (DIDO,PLUTOreactors) varieties. The Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), built on the site of, and using the infrastructure of, the particle accelerator NIM-ROD, produced its first neutrons in December 1984 and was officially inaugurated and named ISIS by the Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in October 1985. The design operating intensity of lSlS is 200 pA of 800MeV protons with the present level of performance some 110μlA at 750 MeV.

摘要:
During the past year a ceremony was held to celebrate the completion of the installation of acold source in one of the beam tubes of the heavy water research reactor, (10 – 15 MW, ≈ 2.8 × 10l4n cm−2s-−1), at the Institute of Atomic Energy, Beijing, China. The essential com- ponent is a liquid hydrogen container of 10mm × 50mm volume located at the inner end of the beam tube next to the reactor core. A thermal siphon con- nected to a helium compressor system is used to keep the container of liquid hydrogen cooled. Preliminary meas- urements show a gain of 12 is obtained for 5Å, neutrons. Two beams of 22 mm × 52 mm area will be extracted from the cold source and transported to another hall by a 32 m guide tube. Initially, a small angle neutron scattering spec- trometer with a 64 × 64 element position sensitive BF3 area detector will be in- stalled and topics of interest to materials sciences will be studied. Topics of interest to biology will be investigated later.

摘要:
For several years, an international group of scientists has been developing instrumentation and gathering experience regarding neutron Brillouin scattering. The requirements are neutrons of relatively high energy, small scattering angles, and high resolution in order to obtain data at small momentum transfer and high energy transfer. In 1988 and 1989 a number of test experiments have been performed on the four-chop-per time-of-flight spectrometer IN5 of the ILL (Grenoble) using a position-sensitive detector with time-of-flight analysis. After the first experiment on high density nitrogen gas at room temperature, the results of which have recently been published (I), IN5 has been improved considerably, mainly with respect to background scattering.

摘要:
A 5 MW swimming pool research reactor has been in operation at the Hahn-Meitner-Institute in Berlin from 1973 to 1985. In 1985, itwas shutdown for an enlargement of the slow neutron flux by a factor of 1014to several cm−2s−1. This enlargement is achieved by a new fuel arrangement, by adding a Be-reflector and by increasing the reactor power to 10 MW. In addition, a cold source has been installed.
