摘要:
Over the last few years, several sectors of industry have used the facilities of the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) to make neutron scattering measurements related to their productresearch, control and development. ILL is now seeking to increase its involvement with industry and to this end a workshop dedicated to applied research in the domains of materials, chemistry and surfaces was held on June 5, 1998. The meeting was attended by about 30 representatives from industrial laboratories.

摘要:
ICANS XIV, the fourteenth meeting of the International Collaboration on Advanced Neutron Sources, took place at Starved Rock Lodge, Utica. Illinois, from June 14–19. 1998. Argonne's Intense Pulsed Neutron Source division served as host. The US Department of Energy, The University of Chicago Board of Governors, Argonne National Laboratory. Los Alamos National Laboratory, Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the Neutron Scattering Society of America sponsored the meeting. Jack Carpenter was conference chair and organizer, with Erik Iverson assisting, while Laura Miller, IPNS executive secretary, served as conference secretary. Beverly Marzec. Cathy Riblon, Carolyn Tobin, Ira Bresof and Merle Fuber, all of IPNS, ably and goodnaturedly saw to all the needs of the attendees. One hundred twenty-seven participants registered for the meeting, representing 27 institutionsand tencountries.

摘要:
A summer school on neutron scattering, the fifth in a continuing series, was held at Chalk River Laboratories during the week of June 22–26, 1998. The event was jointly funded by the Canadian Institute for Neutron Scattering and the National Research Council of Canada. The school attracted thirty participants, mostly from across Canada and the US, but also from Europe and Asia. More than half of the lecturers were invited speakers from universities and other neutron laboratories, with the balance made up of the Chalk River staff.

摘要:
The third Neutron Summer School for young scientists in Japan, organized by the Neutron Scattering Association of Japan (NSAJ), was held both at KENS (Neutron Scattering Facilities, KEK, Tsukuba) and JRR-3M (JAERI, Tokai) from July 20–24, 1998. KENS has a pulsed neutron source of an accelerator base, while JRR-3M has a reactor-based steady neutron source. Participants used both pulsed and steady state neutrons. Consequently, the school was divided into two parts, in which the first half from July 20–22 was held at KENS. The content involved lectures on pulsed neutron scattering and educational experiments with FOX (diffractorneter for a single crystal), MRP (multipurpose diffractometer), VECA (powder diffractometer), PorePore (polarized neutron reflectometer), CAT (crystal analyzer type spectrometer) and INC (chopper type spectrometer) using pulsed neutrons.

摘要:
An all-day symposium on “New Directions i n Neutron Scattering Instrumentation for Protein and Membrane Crystallography” was held at the annual meeting of the ACA in Arlington, Virginia on July 23, 1998. The aims of the organizers, Benno Schoenborn and Bob von Dreele (LANL), were to promote and to make provisions for new technical developments which promise to broaden the application of neutron diffraction in structural biology. Ten speakers presented recent accomplishments in the application of neutrons to biology using a variety of different diffraction techniques to an audience of about 50.

摘要:
The 4th International Workshop on Quasi–Elastic Neutron Scattering, QENS '98, was held in Nykoping, Sweden from August 6–8, 1998. Following the tradition of previous meetings, which were held on the grounds of Windsor Castle (UK), in apalace in San Sebastian (Spain) and in a converted farm house on the campus of the University of Parma (Italy), the conference venue was an “old” building, in this case aconverted mill house. There were 40 participants, from a wide variety of disciplines but all with a common interest in techniques, applications and results from quasi-elastic neutron scattering. It was a lively and informal meeting with a lot of discussion.

摘要:
This was the sixth Zuoz school in a series that has become well established in the neutron scattering diary. This year's school on “Complementarity Between Neutron and Synchrotron X–ray Scattering” drew approximately 110 people from 18 different countries (including as far away as Australia) to participate in the school and enjoy the beautiful surroundings of the Engadine valley from August 9–13, 1998. The meeting opened with a tour-de-force overview of the relevant cross sections by W. Fischer (PSI), and went on the first day to concentrate on surfaces, films and multilayers with talks by S. Sinha (Argonne) and D. McMorrow (RisG) and then a theoretical talk by M. Altarelli (ESRF), who introduced some of the capabilities of the latest synchrotrons, addressing interesting subjects such as orbital ordering in the transition-metal oxides. Powder diffrac with synchro(Griffith Univ., Australia), respectively. Magnetic correlations in lowdimensional systems was discussed by H. Braun (PSI) and W. Stirling (U. Liverpool, UK), covering magnetic neutron and X–ray scattering. G. Schiitz (Wiirzburg) introduced magnetic dichroism and the interesting idea to use it as a microscope to image domains. Turning to soft matter (polymers), D. Richter (KFA, Jiilich) showed what information inelastic scattering can bring to the subject. Returning to magnetism, W. Buyers (Chalk River, Canada) discussed magnetic neutron inelastic scattering, and V. Geshkenbein (ETH, Zurich) continued on the same general subject with an account of vortices in the superconducting state. The school also contained two clear lectures on the optics of synchrotrons and neutrons by world experts A. Freund (ESRF) and P. Boni (PSI), respectively. Refocusing on the physical problems as well as the techniques, Hans Ott (ETH, Zurich), in an evening lecture, gave the participants a walk through “hot minding us of the equal importance of topics” in condensed matter research, all the way from quantum dots to nonFermi liquids and on to the interface between biology and physics.

摘要:
More than 140 attendees representing 38 universities and research institutions gathered in Los Alamos for the third annual meeting of the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) User Group from August 10–12, 1998. Discussions and workshops focused on recent scientific discoveries and the current status of the facility upgrades. The meeting was organized by the Executive Committee of the LANSCE User Group, chaired by Collin Broholm of Johns Hopkins University.
