摘要:
This article is a summary of seven health maintenance organization (HMO) case studies focusing on strategies used to obtain favorable prices for inpatient hospital services. All of the HMOs stressed that the effort should be based on the local environment and should accommodate the special circumstances of organization of physicians' practices and hospitals, as well as the structure of the HMO and its strategic plan for growth.

This article examines the role of multihospital systems and alliances as “innovation carriers.” Drawing upon studies of interpersonal and interorganizational communications networks, the authors suggest how membership in a system or alliance, as well as network characteristics, affects innovation practices in general acute care hospitals.

摘要:
This study investigated those factors that influenced employers' experiences with health maintenance organizations (HMOs). It examined a national cross-sectional sample of chief executive officers (CEOs) and benefits managers. Findings revealed that different administrative issues such as the volume of paperwork, confusion about benefits, and educating employees about HMO benefits were of primary importance in affecting management's experiences with HMOs. Differences were found between CEOs' and benefits managers' responses.

摘要:
During the 1980s, private economists and government policy-makers promoted market competition as a means of controlling costs and improving quality in the health services industry. However, inflationadjusted costs rose faster during the 1980s than during the 1970s, and most of the expected benefits were not realized. Competitive reform failed because government and private payors were unwilling or unable to force providers to compete primarily on price and quality. Despite its failure to control costs, competitive reform has created a “mythology” that continues to influence health policy to the detriment of effective reform.

Hospital human resource managers were surveyed to determine their understanding of negligent hiring employment law and the tools used in employment screening. This article describes the results, which indicate that hospital human resource managers understand the law but that there are gaps in the use of some employment screening tools. The authors make recommendations for future research.
