Most health managers already know that the consequences of inadequate health care quality are costly—in many senses. Law suits, declining staff morale, a poor public image are byproducts of poor patient care. Eventually, loss of license and accreditation may even threaten providers' viability. Even with this knowledge, health care managers may not feel compelled to study new approaches to quality control, for they may not realize what they can do to improve quality of care in their institutions. This article, then, is to show managers how they might contribute to improvements in quality of care.

A number of solutions have been suggested for the malpractice crisis. Among these, arbitration (which government, labor, and business have used successfully) could be one useful method for dealing with this critical impediment to the delivery, administration, and financing of health care.
