Antigen detection in routinely formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded specimens is a commonly used working tool for the pathologist. However, fixation induces masking of many antigens of diagnostic or prognostic value. The type and length of fixation have an important influence on the extent of antigen masking. Traditionally, unmasking has been accomplished by enzymatic treatment of the deparaffinized sections with various proteolytic enzymes, e.g., trypsin and pronase. In recent years, nonenzymatic antigen unmasking, or antigen retrieval,“ methods have been developed. Most of these methods use brief high-temperature(S100°C) exposure of the deparaffinized sections in various solutions. Time of exposure and type molarity and composition of the solutions are the variables affecting the success of antigen unmasking. The nonenzymatic antigen unmasking technique is reviewed and the methodology is discussed.

Microglandular adenosis (MGA) is a rare benign condition composed of discrete, glandular structures lined by a single type of epithelial cell; the absence of a myoepithelial mantle makes it unique among benign proliferative lesions of the breast. The haphazardly arranged tubules are characteristically uniform, rounded, open and contain eosinophilic material. The surrounding stroma varies but is frequently hypocellular and collegenous. Immunohistochemical findings are characteristic in that, in addition to positive staining with antibodies to cytokeratin. The epithelial cells stain consistenly for S-100 Protein but are negative for epithelial membrane antigen. Staining with antibodies to basement membrane components and actin confirm the presence of basement membrane and, in all but one study, the absence of a myoepithelial layer it is important that MGA not be mistaken for tubular carcinoma and useful points in the differential diagnosis are highlighted Carcinoma with characteristic features has been reported in association with MGA. The exact relationship between MGA and carcinoma, however, remains uncertain.

It is often difficult to distinguish parathyroid carcinoma from adenoma based on histopathologic features alone. Understanding of the molecular pathogenesis of parathyroid carcinoma may have considerable clinical value and aid in making a correct diagnosis. For this reason, the possible role of the retinoblastoma tumor-suppressor gene(RB) was investigated.

Microscopic examination of a breast capsule that accompanied an explanted prosthetic device reveated that it was lined by a well-ordered double layer of cells resembling those that line bursal spaces or synovium (Fig. 1). The incidence and biological nature of this change were investigated in 10 additional cases.

To delineate the clinicopathologic features of a lowgrade angiosarcoma of the skin which resembles but is distinct from both ordinary angiosarcoma and endovascular papillary angioendothelioma (Dabska's tumor), based on an analysis of 15 cases the lesion is descriptively named retiform hemangioendothelioma (RH).

To investigate whether the peculiar cardiac histiocytoid hemangioma-like lesions (HHLL) or mesotheliallmonocytic incidental cardiac excrescences (MICE) described in earlier studies were artifactual. The contents of extracorporeal bypass (ECBP) filters and material adherent to mediastinal and pericardial drains were examined in 37 cases of cardiac surgery and compared with two index cases.
