This piecepresentsametaphoric scaffold, aTime Cable from which to build an invisible building. The scaffold is temporary, to be torn down when the building is finished, but it can be recreated when a new building is contemplated. As with all such geo‐spatial constructs, it is merely a diagram to hold in one's mind while mastering the systemic approach to family therapy pioneered by the Milan Associates. Since this is their own model, they do not needascaffold. For me, trying to teach their model, it has proved useful asaworking too

Educational psychologists, remedial teachers and others working with children who are considered to have learning difficulties tend to regard the problem as being within the child and disregard the importance of the social/educational context. This paper argues that contextual factors are very important and classifies these factors in terms of the subsystems within the educationalsystem.Typical subsystem structures and interactions are discussed and illustrated with case studies. The roles and interventions of the therapist working within the educational system are described. The numerous difficulties in working with a large system are discussed as well as some strategies for dealing with them.

This paper is an account of the use of a focal formulation as part of a method of brief focal family therapy. The history of the focal approach is outlined and the concept of focal hypothesis examined. The theoretical basis of the approach is discussed by considering the way meaning in a family is expressed. Two forms of meaning are described: surface action, which is the current content of interaction, and depth structure, which is its context and is based in subjective history. A case example is provided to illustrate the application of the concepts, therapeutic implications, and the basis of outcome evaluation.

The practice of family therapy has become widespread in Australia during the past fifteen years. Beliefs here about family therapy mirror wider social trends and dilemmas. Several difficulties persist, which are anchored in the geography and colonial history of the society.
