This typology of families is composed of five family systems named “Two Against the World”, “Children Come First”, “Share and Share Alike”, “Every Man for Himself”, and “Until Death Do Us Part”. In this evaluation of therapy experience for 82 families by brief therapy at Bouverie Clinic to 1976–1977, therapists' and clients' rating of outcome were obtained.After termination of therapy both therapists and clients reported high improvement rates in the presenting problem(s) as well as in the quality of family relationships and in the family's ability to deal with further problems. High agreement was found between therapist’ and clients' ratings of outcomes.Therapists were more favorable than clients in their ratings of change in the presenting problem and in their ratings of change in the quality of family relationships, but not in assessing the change in family's further problem solving ability.At follow‐up clients were predominantly satisfied with their therapy experience.In addition, therapists' ability to predict outcome accurately, after the second of therapy, was strongly supported by our fi

The empirical, clinical and theoretical literature on School Refusal is reviewed.A study is reported in which a comprehensive group of forty severe school refusers was compared with a matched control group. They differed onawide range of variables. The school refusing children were more depressed, anxious, introverted, neurotic, over protected and less intelligent. Their parents' educational attainment and levels of intelligence were lower; they were older and had larger families; father's occupational status was lower and he was often absent from home.The results are discussed.A three level system theory interpretation is presented:(i)child;(ii)family;(iii)beyond the family.Some therapeutic implications are offered.

Family therapy inauguratedaradical change in the way many emotional and psychiatric problems are understood. ‘Systems thinking’ dictated that the individual needed to be seen withinalarger systemic context if his/her behaviour was to be understood and effective intervention carried out. The logical extension of this way of thinking is to argue that the family itself must be viewed within a wider context. This perspective has appearedanumber of times in the family therapy literature, particularly in the ‘ecological’ tradition.
