AbstractIn any large multinational Corporation responsible for the movement of finished equipment on a global basis, the logistics problems created can be daunting. This paper outlines how we endeavour to minimize the risk of in‐transit damage by the use of laboratory test facilities during the design phase of a new product—this could be 3 years prior to launch.First, however, we have to examine the current logistic patterns of our equipment movements. This paper illustrates some of the problems and pitfalls presented to the packaging designers of a large corporation. 摘要:
AbstractTo make packaging truly beneficial to human beings, it is important to help people learn more about the great variety of packaging materials and packaging techniques. In applying that knowledge, certain ethics should be observed by those engaged in packaging activities. The first step in achieving this task is to recognize what constitutes the packaging sciences, and from the results of various investigations a system of packaging sciences has been produced. Packaging science, as we have organized it, consists of the three major fields of packaging sociology, packaging materials science and packaging technology. With regard to the ethics that should form the backbone for the varied packaging activities, we propose that a Packaging Charter be established, incorporating the basic spirit and the ideas outlined herein.

摘要:
AbstractThe dielectric and morphological changes of susceptors during heating in a microwave oven were studied. It was found that during the course of heating, cracks and holes were formed in the susceptors' surface and the degree of crystallinity of the polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film used was reduced, thus reducing the heat stability and heating capability of the susceptors.

AbstractTwo methods were studied in order to estimate the degradability of packaging materials, using cellulosic materials—such as cellophane or paraffin waxed paper—as models. A preliminary orientation test was carried out, based on the visual observation of microbial development on the materials used. This qualitative test permitted an initial classification of materials according to their potential degradability, and especially allowed the identification of microbial species, particularly fungi, most likely to grow on the materials being studied.The biofragmentation of materials was evaluated from their dry weight loss. For a fixed time of incubation, the classification of these materials was based either on the percentage or on the absolute value of this weight loss. For the method applied to a solid medium, we found that an inoculum deposited on an agar surface was more suitable than direct inoculation of the samples, in fact, pure fungi strains, especiallyTrichoderma virideorAspergillus niger, were found to be more suitable for cellulosic materials than the bacterial strains (Pseudomonas fluorescens) or bacterial mixture u

AbstractIn packaging, heat‐seal seams have been known as ‘peelable seals’ for a long time. In this system seal medium A is sealed with seal medium B. They are combined in such a way that the sealed seam can be reopened by a defined force without destroying the packaging.Typical applications for peelable seals are boxes or containers with sealed cover sheets, blisters and flexible packagings. AbstractModified atmosphere packages were designed and used for the packaging of green chili peppers. Respiration of green peppers at 10°C was characterized by the closed‐system method as a function of O2and CO2concentrations, and was incorporated into mass balance equations of O2and CO2gases in order to predict the gas composition inside the package over time. From the prediction of atmospheres inside packages constructed of the available plastic films, three retail packages (110‐g peppers) were designed and studied experimentally for their ability to modify the package atmosphere and to retain quality (moisture, ascorbic acid and chlorophyll). Pepper packages using 25 μm low‐density polyethylene and 30 μm cast polypropylene could attain modified atmosphere close to the optimal gas concentrations (3% O2and 5% CO2), and therefore provided better quality retention compared with unpackaged
