摘要:
SYNOPSISMeasurements made on over 3400 cover‐glasses of 16 different grades show that only 43 satisfied the Royal Microscopical Society's specification of thickness and only 18 of these were of the specified refractive index. Many cover‐glasses are highly wedge‐shaped and in some samples there is a significant high positive correlation between the mean thickness and the slope of the

摘要:
SYNOPSISThe morphology and physical ultrastructure of the lipoprotein component of elastic tissue has been characterized; its synthesis by the interaction of elastin and lipid by van der Waals' forces was observed. Comparative studies of the elastic tissue of chicken and young human aorta have been made.In vivostudies demonstrate how general lipid metabolism, and morphological and histochemical changes are integrated. The general lipid metabolism and that which occurs in vascular tissuein situwere studied in chickens which received a hypercholesterolæmic diet, and a prophylactic therapy with the enzyme E1*** of the elastase complex and a globulin fraction of the serum. Physiological adaption to the diet was shown, especially by the formation of elastin lipoprotein in the vascular wall, which thereby demonstrates a mode of enzyme action.Macromolecular reactions have been visualized with the electron microscope in the vascular wall, especially in areas where compression occurs. The activity of fibroblasts of the internal elastic lamina of the chicken has been observed and the intracellular formation and secretion of sheet elastin with retractile properties is described for the first time; filaments have also been observed

摘要:
SYNOPSISThe spermatogenesis of the honey‐bee,Apia indica(F.), has been worked out with special reference to the abortive meiosis and the role of cytoplasmic organelles. The haploid number of sixteen chromosomes in the parthenogenetic males remains constant through‐out spermatogenesis.Meiosis I is abortive, resulting in the formation of a definite non‐nucleated cytoplasmic bud containing some extra‐nuclear spindle fibres and the cytoplasmic body. The significance of an extra‐and an intra‐nuclear spindle in relation to the abortive meiosis is discussed.Meiosis II is normal so far as the nuclear division is concerned. The cytoplasm, however, divides unequally, resulting in the formation of a normal spermatid and a diminutive non‐functional spermatid body. The mitochondria are in the form of filaments and granules in the early stages. During meiosis I they assume a characteristic “blebbed” appearance. In the spermatid they fuse to form a typical mitochondrial nebenkern, which ultimately gives rise to the mitochondrial sheath around the axial filament of the sperm.A number of typical duplex spheroids (“Golgi dictyosomes”), each with a lipid sheath enclosing a non‐lipid medulla, are present in the spermatocytes. In the spermatid these duplex spheroids fuse to form a typical single acroblast which is sloughed off after depositing a pro‐acrosome at the nuclear membrane. The pro‐acrosome condenses to form the

摘要:
SYNOPSISSections stained with acid fuchsin and counterstained with light green SF (yellowish) show a striking polychrome effect in shades of red, violet, and blue. This is noteworthy for at least two reasons:(a) Blue is, of course, a primary colour and cannot, therefore, be produced by the mere admixture of red and green, which are the colours of the two dyes used. Chemical union must therefore take place between these two acid dyes to produce a series of new dyes, one of which is blue.(b) It has long been known to histologists that a basic dye will unite chemically with an acid dye to form a two‐colour stain, but similar union between two acid dyes was not hitherto thought possible or even consi
