AbstractA unique report of an abdominal wall rhabdomyoma is presented. The rarity of this tumor may lead to confusion with a malignant neoplasm. Computerized axial tomography localized the tumor to a specific muscle group and demonstrated absence of invasion into surrounding tissues. Computerized tomography is valuable in the assessment of abdominal wall tumors and provides useful information in planning an operative approach.

AbstractThe results of a pilot multimodality program (surgery + radiotherapy + chemotherapy) are reported in 34 women with advanced stage III and IV adenocarcinoma of the breast. The median relapse‐free survival for all patients was 24 months, with 74% of the premenopausal patients and 37% of the postmenopausal alive at five years (P = 0.18). AbstractA case of galactorrhea induced by hyperprolactinemia has been reported. This patient had bronchogenic carcinoma, undifferentiated, spindle‐cell‐type, and underwent a pneumonectomy followed by postoperative irradiation of the mediastinum. The initial surgical resection, followed by irradiation, returned the abnormal levels of prolactin secretion to normal. AbstractHepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) developed in two women who had ingested oral contraceptives for prolonged duration. One of the patients had hepatoma restricted to the liver, and it was successfully resected. The other patient presented with metastatic HCC to the sacrum and lung, and she died after an initial response to chemotherapy in 12 months. Review of literature showed 23 previously reported cases of HCC associated with “pill” use since 1973. Although the reported instances of HCC in pill users are few in number, the majority of affected females were in their 20s and early 30s, without any preexisting liver disease. Even though the risk of developing HCC on oral contraceptives is low, this association adds to the list of complications induced by oral contraceptives in premenopausal women. AbstractHepatoma accounts for less than 2% of all cancer death in this country, but it is responsible for 10‐20% lethal malignancy in Asia and Africa. There are racial differences in its clinical manifestation, association with cirrhosis and/or hepatitis viral infection, pattern of spread, and prognosis. Mass screening program in China using alpha‐fetal protein test has detected earlier cases, improved resectability and cure rate. About 10‐15% of the patients in this country had surgical treatment. For patients with locally advanced and unresectable carcinoma, regional therapies such as infusion chemotherapy (IA hepatic or IV portal), ligation of hepatic artery, radiotherapy (external or internal), immunotherapy, either singularly or in various combinations have been tried. AbstractA single dose of thiopental (37‐42 mg/kg) sufficient to achieve anesthesia induction increased the growth rate of a 3‐methylcholanthrene‐induced syngeneic murine fibrosarcoma in C57B1/6 mice. While no alterationsin in vitro growth kinetics of tumor cells cultured with thiopental could explain these data, significant alterations in cell‐mediated immunity were observed. Spleen cells from C57B1/6 mice treated with thiopental were impaired in their ability to respond in a mixed leukocyte culture (MLC) to BALB/c stimulator cells. Spleen cells from thiopental‐treated mice suppressed the ability of cells from untreated animals to respond in a third‐party MLC. The degree of suppression was directly proportional to the number of cells from thiopentaltreated mice in the third party. When these cells were added to an MLC at various times during the culture period, suppression of the early phases of the MLC was seen. Removal of plastic adherent cells from the third party resulted in loss of suppression, but treatment of third‐party cells with anti‐thy 1.2 serum or irradiation did not prevent suppression. AbstractThe effect of general microwave hyperthermia and hepatic artery ligation (HAL) was tested on Wistar rats with a transplanted N‐methyl‐N‐nitroso‐guanidine‐induced adenocarcinoma in the liver. Total body hyperthermia (41.5°C for 1 hour, three times during 24 hours) was given on the same day as HAL, and 1, 2, and 3 days after. HAL induced a slower tumor growth than untreated controls. No additive effect was registered when total body microwave hyperthermia was added to HAL. When hyperthermia was added 2 days after HAL, there was a transient decrease in tumor volume as in the HAL series. AbstractA rare case of retroperitoneal transitional cell carcinoma arising from primitive urogenital remnants is described in a 50‐year‐old female. The patient had a 15 × 12 cm firm to cystic mass in the left iliac fossa which was markedly adherent to retroperitoneal structures and which could not be excised. Biopsy from the mass revealed transitional cell papillary carcinoma. Intravenous pyelogram and cystoscopy were normal.
