AbstractThe serum titer of colony‐stimulating factor which stimulatesin vitrogrowth of bone marrow cells to form colonies of granulocytic and mononuclear cells is elevated 18 hr following bilateral ureteral ligation and unilateral or bilateral nephrectomy in mice. AbstractErythropoietin (ESF) activity has been studied in intact and renoprival baboons. ESF activity is present in anephric animals and is responsive to bleeding or exogenous androgens, but not to brief hypoxic hypoxia exposure. Higher ESF levels are frequently observed early after bilateral nephrectomy. Extrarenal ESF is suppressed by boiling. Hormonal ESF regulation of erythropoietins persists in renoprival baboons, and may differ from that seen in the intact state.

AbstractThe chromosomes of an adenocarcinoma of the cervix uteri were studied by a direct squash method. A modal number of about 40 chromosomes was obtained from the differentiated portion of the tumor. A ring chromosome and a minute chromosome were seen in 58% of the hypodiploid cells. The undifferentiated portion of the tumor produced no satisfactory chromosomes for analysis.

AbstractRenal cell carcinoma represents nearly 90% of all malignant tumors of the kidney. The varied aspects of this tumor's pathophysiology have been a continuing challenge to early diagnosis and successful therapy. For inapparent reasons it has been noted in this and other studies that renal cell carcinoma is twice as common in males as in females. As we have shown, renal cell carcinoma occurs in all age groups but is most common in the sixth and seventh decades. In spite of an occasional case, heredity probably does not apparently play a role in the pathogenesis of this disease. This study has shown that because of the multiple pathways of dissemination, renal cell carcinoma can be unpredictable in the sites of metastasis. The lung, however, is consistently the most common site of metastatic growth. Many experts have attempted to introduce a system of classification related to prognosis. The present experience using the classification of Flocks and Kadesky showed there was a notable drop in survival in stages III and IV as compared to I and II. Also, there was little difference in survival between patients having stage III and stage IV disease. In general, the survival statistics agree with those of others. The classic triad of renal cell carcinoma was associated with 5‐year survival in only four cases, indicating it to be a sign of advanced disease. Radical nephrectomy continues to be the initial treatment in most centers. The most promising of the newer methods is hormonal therapy, which is based on the theory that hormones underlie the mechanism of host resistance to renal cell carcinoma. AbstractEleven cases of granular cell myoblastoma are reported. Eight cases were symptomatic and consist of clinical material. None of these were diagnosed preoperatively. The other three cases are incidental findings from routine autopsies. All tumors are benign clinically and histologically. The treatment of choice is local wide excision. It is worthwhile to indicate that this tumor can occur in combination with other malignant tumors (Table II), but we do not believe that there is any correlation.

AbstractAn unusual case of perirenal fibrous xanthoma (histiocytoma) is presented. Review of the literature reveals that this disease entity is indeed very rare and presents no specific clinical signs and symptoms. Fortunately, the majority of the cases are benign, but there is really no solitary histological feature that can predict the outcome of the disease. Arteriography and microscopical appearance are helpful diagnostic aids.

AbstractThe significance of prostatic carcinoma as a primary cause of death is presented; the concept that prostatic carcinoma is omnipresent in elderly males is challenged; the incidence of prostatic carcinoma is reviewed and discrepancies in published reports are analyzed. A comparison is made between the yield of positive diagnoses using open perineal biopsy and needle biopsy techniques. Contraindications in the use of needle biopsy for the diagnosis of operable carcinoma of the prostate are discussed.

AbstractErythropoietin (ESF) levels were assayed in 19 female and male patients with intact kidneys with pituitary tumors or following open hypophysectomy or combined hypophysectomy and adrenalectomy for disseminated tumor states. Saline‐injected control mice had 0.38 ± 0.04% Fe59uptake (ESF). Hypophysectomized, adrenalectomized, castrated females had 2.96 ± 1.24% Fe59uptake (ESF) with an average peripheral hematocrit of 29.2 vol %. Hypophysectomized, castrated males had 1.59 ± 0.30% Fe59uptake (ESF) with an average peripheral hematocrit of 30.1 vol %. Thus, absence of the adrenals or functioning anterior pituitary gland does not prevent increased ESF activity. The presence of a pituitary tumor is also not consistently associated with increased ESF activity or release. The role of these endocrine organs in the regulation of ESF release in these states is therefore not essential but more likely represents a normal synergistic mechanism. Elevation of peripheral ESF levels is associated with improvement of anemia after hypophysectomy and may be an additional objective criterion and prognostic indicator of beneficial patient response to hypophysectomy in certain tumor st

AbstractA micromethod of serum cholinesterase activity determination is presented. The changes in activity levels in uremic patients requiring hemodialysis are presented in relation to blood transfusions, blood urea nitrogen, and serum creatinine levels, as well as hematocrit percentages. The levels were low in uremic patients and were further affected by hemodialysis. The values of serum cholinesterase in patients with renal allografts as well as the renal vein effluent of isolated perfused canine kidneys have been determined. These levels were near a normal range. It is suggested that anesthesia in uremic patients necessitating muscle relaxation with an agent that hydrolyzes cholinesterase should be deferred for 24 hr after hemodialysis.

AbstractEvaluation of 1000 consecutive proctosigmoidoscopy examinations performed for the first time in patients admitted to the surgical service of the Veterans Administration Hospital of Lincoln, Nebraska, is presented. Of 143 lesions, 21 were considered malignant. Eight symptomatic patients were found with cancerous lesions. Barium enema studies did not result in significant additional findings. Comparison with results of other investigators and with programs to detect carcinoma of the cervix is made to emphasize the value of proctosigmoidoscopy in the detection of cancer of the rectosigmoid area.
