AbstractAn indirect immunoperoxidase method was used in an attempt to detect carcino‐embryonic antigen (CEA) in 17 well‐differentiated colonic adenocarcinomas, five osteosarcomas, and four chordomas. AbstractThis case report of giant cell granuloma involving the maxilla is of particular interest for two reasons: the locally aggressive clinical course contrasting with the diagnosis of a benign disease and the spectacular, although transient, response under steroid treatment. Corticotherapy should be further tested in cases of invasive or recurring giant cell granuloma.

AbstractRadiation‐induced well‐differentiated and poorly differentiated follicular thyroid cancers were transplanted into the intrascapular fat pads of male Fisher 144 rats. The tumors grew in the recipient rats and after a time interval were removed and studied along with normal rat thyroids for lysosomal activity and ultrastructural characteristics. Plasma from experimental and control rats was also studied for lysosomal activity. Rats with radiation‐induced thyroid carcinoma had a decrease in growth rate compared with normal rats. There was no significant increase in plasma lysosomal enzymes in the experimental rats. Well‐differentiated thyroid carcinomatous tissue showed increased total activities of lysosomal enzymes as well as a difference in subcellular distribution compared with normal and poorly differentiated carcinomatous tissue. AbstractA 44‐year‐old white male with pseudomyxoma peritonei and intractable malignant ascites is described. This patient underwent three peritoneovenous shunt procedures utilizing first the LeVeen shunt and finally the Denver shunt in a surgical attempt at palliative decompression of his malignant ascites. The peritoneovenous shunts resulted in massive tumor embolization to the pulmonary vasculature, clinically asymptomatic disseminated intravascular coagulation, and partial thrombosis of the superior vena cava. AbstractWhole blood catalase levels were estimated using a disc flotation method in 209 random patients with a wide variety of malignancies. Fifty patients had received no treatment, and the remainder, although having undergone prior therapy, had recurrent or metastatic disease at the time of the study. No relationship was found between the presence of cancer and catalase levels. A direct relationship was found for catalase with hemoglobin levels in both normal and patients' samples. Whole blood catalase is of no value in diagnosis and monitoring of cancer. The decreased catalase values found here and reported previously by others are the result of low hemoglobin levels found in many patients with cancer.

AbstractA retrospective analysis of 48 cases of histologically proven primary gastrointestinal lymphoma was done. The analysis covered a 12‐year period from January 1966 through December 1977. Four percent of all malignant tumors of the gastrointestinal tract were of this type. Males outnumbered females by a ratio of 1.8:1. The mean age of the patients was 21 years. The vagueness and variability of clinical features and nonspecific radiological findings were the main reasons for subjecting all the patients in this series to laparotomy. The most common site of involvement was the ileocecal region, followed by the ileum, the jejunum, and the stomach. Most of the cases were in an advanced stage of the disease as was suggested by the finding of lump in 60% and ascites in 20% of the cases. Radical resection, possible in only six cases, appears to be the best treatment. The effectiveness of radiotherapy and chemotherapy were disappointing. Prognostically, cases of localized and polypoidal lesions of the small bowel and Hodgkin lymphoma showed better surviva

AbstractStaging laparotomy is widely utilized in the management of selected patients with Hodgkin disease. The local trauma produced by extensive en bloc periaortic node removal for detection of subdiaphragmatic disease may predispose the patient to arterial thromboembolic events. This procedure seems undesirable and unnecessary especially in patients known to have lymphocyte‐depleted and mixed‐cellularity‐type disease or in those found to have splenic involvement by intraoperative sectioning. These patients will often have microscopic tumor in their random needle and wedge liver biopsies taken at surgery; extensive periaortic tissue sampling is therefore unnecessary. AbstractA specific red cell adhesion test was done in 243 patients with carcinoma of the cervix uteri and showed the presence of isoantigens in only 27.16% of the patients with infiltrating squamous cell carcinoma. There was a gradual loss of isoantigens during the development of carcinoma. The test can be usefully employed in studying the evolution of the disease. The negativity of the test was found to increase as clinical severity of the disease increases. Also, the highest percentage (57.57%) of retained isoantigen was found in large‐cell nonkeratinizing carcinoma, a well‐differentiated type for the cervix.
