AbstractTwo groups of dogs were given dimethylnitrosamine (DMNA), a hepatotoxic drug, in a single lethal dose. Control dogs were allowed to die. Experimental dogs received life‐saving auxiliary liver transplants which were removed after recovery of the host liver or when rejection occurred. The histopathologic findings in the host livers of the two groups are presented. Remarkable variations were noted even among livers from the same group. Centrilobular and midzonal congestion and necrosis were the main findings but appeared less severe than one would expect in view of the lethality of DMNA in control dogs. AbstractThere were 30 cases of cylindroma at Ellis Fischel State Cancer Hospital from 1940 to 1969. Of these 30 cases, 22 were seen initially at Ellis Fischel. Fourteen patients died of cylindroma; the average survival from diagnosis to death was 66 months. Reappearance occurred in 20 of the 30 cases, with the interval between the first reappearance of tumore being 32 months. Tumor was located in the major salivary gland in 9 cases, minor salivary gland in 8 cases, and paranasal sinuses in 3 cases. Tumor frequently invaded bone, became fixed to surrounding structures, and not infrequently metastasized widely. Treatment consisted of surgery and/or radiation therapy. Of the 22 cases seen initially at Ellis Fischel, 16 were pure cylindromas, 2 were mixed with mucoepidermoid, 1 was mixed with adenocarcinoma, and 3 were mixed with epidermoid carcinoma. Four patients were cured of their cylindormas, as determined by survival at 10 or more years. All these cures were arrived at through surgical extirpation of the tumor. Radiotherapy and infusion chemotherapy gave good palliation but no cures. Adequacy of margin around the tumor was the single most important factor in cure. It is found that biopsy of the tumor did not alter survival. Patients with parotid tumors did much better than tumors located in other areas. Fixation of the tumor mass did not alter survival and nodal involvement was an ominous sign. AbstractA case of hemangioendothelioma of the penis is presented. It was treated initially by excision and postoperative irradiation to the primary site. Systemic chemotherapy and radiotherapy to the thoracic spine was administered in the belief that the patient had osseous metastases in the spine. The patient was subsequently free of disease for more than five years at which time metastases appeared almost simultaneously in the extradural spinal column, right 12th rib, and lungs. AbstractThe literature on the role of irradiation in breast carcinoma was reviewed in detail. Routine postoperative irradiation of breast cancer has not altered the prognosis of carcinoma of the breast. Various classifications of breast cancer, including AJC, UICC, Haagensen, and M. D. Anderson, are discussed in detail and differences outlined in Table II. The clinical stages of cancer of the breast are outlined in Table III. Stage I is essentially operable; Stage III is essentially inoperable. It is in Stage II that preoperative irradiation should be considered, although at present untested. The future role of irradiation in cancer of the breast is in the preoperative treatment of operable Stage II lesions, and in the early lesion which, perhaps, can be treated with preservation of the breast. Small doses of irradiation for breast cancer are not recommended.

AbstractThe development of special methods of bone marrow transplantation, coupled with new knowledge in the area of donor‐recipient selection and the suppression of the secondary diseases, has generated renewed interest in allografting of bone marrow for a variety of diseases. The interest in marrow allotransplantation has overshadowed previously existing interest in autotransplantation despite the fact that autotransplantation has not met with serious side effects, such as GVH and secondary diseases.Sufficient evidence demonstrating the reliability of methods of short‐term and long‐term storage of human bone marrow has now been accumulated. It can be anticipated that reinfusion of bone marrow stored by these methods will result in uniform hematopoetic recovery of bone marrow suppressed by irradiation or chemotherapeutic agents. In cases of malignant diseases in anticipation of future needs, disease‐free marrow can be collected before the malignant process becomes generalized. AbstractThe inhibition of growth of the stilbestrol‐induced hamster kidney tumor by various chemotherapeutic agents was studied in vivo. 5‐Fluorouracil significantly retarded tumor growth and prolonged survival of the treated animals. The antibiotics mithramycin and dactinomycin markedly inhibited the tumor but did not prolong survival. The absence of drug toxicity in the doses used indicated that a more pronounced effect might have been obtained by retreatment at regular intervals. AbstractTwenty‐five Lewis‐Wistar rats, weighing 500 to 525 gm each, received a transplantable mammary tumor which spontaneously arose in this strain; two days later, they were equipped with a silastic catheter inserted into the superior vena cava, the catheter protected by a specially designed harness allowing unrestricted movement of the animals.On the fifth day after tumor implantation, continuous intravenous infusions were begun, five rats serving as control and receiving only saline, twelve rats receiving glucose and eight rats receiving fucose.All 25 animals tolerated the procedure with no toxicity in any group as determined by animal inspection, measurement of blood urea nitrogen and of serum glutamic pyruvate transaminase. There was no significant weight change during the course of the experiment.On completion of infusion, tumors in rats receiving 20% fucose showed a statistically significant smaller mean diameter as compared to both controls and rats receiving intravenous glucose. After cessation of the ten‐day infusion the tumors in the fucose‐treated rats remained significantly smaller than those in their glucose counterparts or controls. Attendant on intravenous fucose therapy was a definite increase in total oral intake and urinary output. AbstractFifty‐five patients with periampullary caicinoma have been treated during a period of 32 years. This tumor represents only 0.01% of our solid tumor cases. Contrary to widely accepted opinion, periampullary carcinoma is not painless in many patients, and a palpable gallbladder is present in only 20% of patients.Twenty‐four patients had a palliative operation with a 13% immediate mortality; the mean survival of this group was 13 months.
