摘要:
The paper evaluated pest control in and yield of plantains when manured with matured compost, poultry and cattle farm yard manures treated or untreated with wood ash or Furadan. The application of untreated poultry farm yard manure significantly improved plantain establishment and yield and reduced pest damage. Plantains which received untreated compost had retarded growth, heavy pest build-up and rapid yield decline. The inclusion of wood ash in other manures effectively checked damage due to plantain weevil and nematodes.

摘要:
An Asteraceous weed,Parthenium hysterophorusL. (parthenium) was inadvertently introduced into India in the 1950's. It has spread with menacing speed and covered millions of hectares of uncultivated land resulting in the reduction of forage production by over 90% in the infested areas. Controlling this weed in arable land is expensive to farmers. Parthenium is also a health hazard to sensitised humans and livestock. The economics of various methods of its control are discussed. The introduction ofCassia sericea, a legume that controls parthenium through interference, is the most cost effective solution. Substantial monetary returns, are expected by adopting this method. However an integrated approach may be more effective for hastening the success of this method.

摘要:
The process of agricultural production is treated as a discrete process and modelled with a nonlinear cobweb recursion relation, which is a composite of production and price setting mechanisms. The various processes that result in ecological exhaustion enter the model as a nonlinearity in the production function. Under these conditions it is predicted that the trajectories of prices and production through time will generate chaotic, and thus unpredictable, patterns.

摘要:
Trifoliate orange (Poncirus trifoliata) is an important citrus rootstock but it has a slow growth rate. Eighteen different mycorrhizal fungi were screened for their symbiotic response with Trifoliate orange. Of the 18 fungi,G. velum(Nedlands),G. caledonicum(Nedlands),G. merredum(Nedlands),G. macrocarpum(Ruakuara) andAcaulosporasp. (ICRISAT) were found to be the best for improving growth and nutrition resulting in greater plant height, stem diameter, plant biomass, P, Zn and Cu content. All the five fungi selected were statistically equivalent in improving growth and nutrition of Trifoliate orange. Inoculation of the root stock with these fungi induced a stem girth of pencil thickness, i.e. ready for budding in 14–15 months in contrast to 22–24 months without mycorrhizal inoculations, thus saving about 8–9 months.

摘要:
Field plot experiments were conducted over two years on two different Nova Scotian soils. Barley and corn were grown successively on the same plots fertilized with different types and sources of animal manures with and without clover intercrops. Barley and corn yields and leaf tissue were analysed for Cu, Mn, and Zn; DPTA extractable soil Cu, Mn, and Zn were assessed concurrently to determine whether the amendments were good sources of metals. Red clover (single and double cut) and sweet clover intercrops were analysed for yield and nutrient content.

Field experiments were conducted for up to three years on two different Nova Scotia soils. Tomatoes and cabbage or cauliflower were grown in rotation on the same plots. Crops were amended with either inorganic fertilizer or two sources of three different types of animal manures. Red clover, sweet clover or common vetch were seeded as intercrops with the vegetables. Tomato and brassica yields and plant tissue were analysed for Cu, Mn and Zn; DTPA extractable soil Cu, Mn, and Zn were assessed concurrently. Legume intercrops were analyzed for yield and nutrient content.
