Corneal thickness increases with advancing age in patients with the honeycomb type of Reis-Bücklers’ dystrophy, affecting visual acuity. A linear relationship is found between these parameters. Also, corneal sensitivity decreases with increasing corneal thickness. The latter may be an import factor in the decrease of ocular irritation later in life in these patients.

Eight families with lattice corneal dystrophy are reported. The symptoms and signs are almost identical with the typical lattice corneal dystrophy type 1 in western countries. Lattice corneal dystrophy has been considered to be a rare disease until recently, but it might be a more common disorder. This is the first report of a large series of lattice corneal dystrophy in Japan.

A 43-year-old woman complained of gradual visual impairment, foreign body sensation, and a white mass in the right eye. Trichiasis and corneal excrescence were observed. A systemic examination revealed no concurrent disease; the family history was noncontributory. A lamellar keratoplasty was performed. An amyloid deposit was found in the excised specimen histopathologically. Secondary localized amyloidosis of the cornea caused by trichiasis is a rare condition.

By using dopplersonographic we compared the blood flow of glaucomatous eyes to that of normal eyes. 65 eyes belonging to 33 patients (14 men and 19 women) of an average age of 67.1 years were compared to 38 normal eyes belonging to 19 subjects of an average age of 66.5. We investigated the oparteries both in the supertrochlear area and in the lateral superorbital area. We discovered a high statistical difference in the examination of the blood flow velocity in the lateral superorbital area and versus the controls. It is possible that information from posterior ciliary artery flow could be obtained by the Doppler examination at that point of the orbit.

A case of ‘spontaneous’ zonular fiber rupture with internal prolapse of the vitreous body without dislocation of the lens is presented. The etiopathogenesis of the lesion is discussed, especially that of the vibrations to which the patient was exposed for more than 10 years. As far as we know, this case is the first description of zonular fiber rupture induced by occupational exposure to vibrations.

A posterior fundus examination around the macula was performed for the patients diagnosed spontaneous posterior vitreous separation. Of 898 eyes, 358 eyes had epiretinal membranes. The presence of membranes did not correlate to sex. The 2-fold greater incidence was observed in the aged group and emmetropic patients. For the progression, age, sex or refractive error alone was not significant, while aged, emmetropic patients showed greater incidence. The longer duration of the membrane existence also indicated the greater progression.

The features and prognoses of 802 cases (908 eyes) of retinal detachment from 8 months to 19 years of age were studied with the patients divided into three age groups: 65 eyes in group I (0–9), 259 eyes in group II (10–14), and 584 eyes in group III(15–19). Eyes in group I were different from the others in many respects. In group I, traumatic detachments, preoperative complications, four-quadrant detachments, and eyes with undetected breaks were more frequent, and the prognosis was worse than in the other groups. Holes with lattice degenerations were most frequent in group III eyes having no history of trauma. Group III resembled adult retinal detachment and group II was thought to be the transitional type.

14 various kinds of retinal detachments were treated by timolol + atropine eye drops. 4 cases were primary procedures and required no further surgery. 10 cases were recurrent detachments after episcleral or endo-vitreous surgery. In 8 cases there was a notable proliferative vitro-retinopathy. 10 cases were completely flattened by this medication and we obtained the reapplication of the posterior pole and the upper retina in the 4 other cases.

A 40-year-old women with a 17-year-history of glaucomatocyclitic crises in 1 eye developed idiopathic foveal subretinal neovascularization in the other eye. The subretinal neovascular membrane spontaneously regressed over a 2-month period, and useful reading vision was subsequently maintained for more than 6 years. This favorable outcome is discussed in relation to the previously reported cases of idiopathic macular subretinal neovascularization.

A family is described with 2 members, father and son, affected by associated retinitis pigmentosa and fundus flavimaculatus, whereas 1 other member had a combination of retinitis pigmentosa and unilateral central areolar atrophy, 1 member a fundus flavimaculatus with electroretinographic findings indicative of a subciinical form of retinitis pigmentosa and the last one with electroretinographic findings indicative of a subciinical form of retinitis pigmentosa.
