Abstract—Biopsy samples from 67 cases with a primary history and histopathological changes highly indicative of a drug reaction were reviewed. The histopathological lesions in 39 dogs, 19 cats, six horses, two goats and one bull were classified into five different groups: erythema multiforme, toxic epidermal necrolysis, lichenoid interface dermatitis (lichenoid drug eruption), vasculitis and pemphigus foliaceus. In 53 cases additional information on the clinical history and follow‐up was received. None of the patients was rechallenged. Clinical and histopathological observations were consistent with a diagnosis of drug reaction in four animals only. The diagnoses were erythema multiforme (one dog, one cat), lichenoid drug eruption (one dog), and pemphigus‐like drug eruption (one cat). A drug reaction was ruled out in seven dogs. In 15 cases no further clinical information was available. No relationship between skin lesions and administered drugs could be established in the remaining 27 patients, as the skin lesions could have been provoked by different concurrent diseases.Résumé—Des biopsies provenant de cas cliniques avec un historique et dans lésions histologiques très suggestifs d'un accident médicamenteux ont été revues. Les lésions histologiques chez 39 chiens, 19 chats, 6 chevaux, 2 chèvres et un taureau ont été classées en 5 catégories; érythème polymorphe, nécrolyse épidermique toxique, dermatite lichénoïde d'interface, vaculite et pemphigus foliacé. Dans 53 cas des informations supplémentaires concernant l'anamnèse et le suivi ont pu être obtenues. Aucun test de provocation n'a été fait. Les observations cliniques et histopathologiques étaient compatibles avec un diagnostic d'accident médicamenteux chez seulement quatre animaux. Le diagnostic était dans ces cas: érythème polymorphe (1 chien, 1 chat), dermatite lichénoïde d'inteface (1 chien) et pemphigus follacé (1 chat). Une réaction médicamenteuse a pu être éliminée chez sept chiens. Dans 15 cas aucune information clinique sur le suivi n'a pu être obtenue. Aucune relation entre les lésions cutanées et l'administration de médicaments n'a pu être établie chez les 27 patients restants, les lésions cutanées ayant pu être provoquées par d'autres maladies.Zusammenfassung—Biopsieproben von 67 Fällen, deren Anamnese und histopathologische Veränderungen deutlich auf eine Medikamentenreaktion hinwies, gelangten zu einer retrospektiven Beurteilung. Die histopathologischen Veränderungen bei 39 Hunden, 19 Katzen, 6 Pferden, 7 Ziegen und 1 Stier wurden in fünf verschiedene Gruppen einegeteilt: Erythema multiforme, toxisch‐epidermale Nekrolyse, lichenoide Interface Dermatitis, (lichenoide Medikamentenreaktion), Vaskulitis und Pemphigus foliaceus. In 53 Fällen wurden Zusatzinformationen über die klinische Anamnese und Nachbehandlung ermittelt.Keiner der Patienten wurde nochmals in gleicher Weise wie zuvor behandelt, um eine erneute Hautreaktion auszulösen. Die klinischen und histopathologischen Befunde stimmten nur bei vier Tieren mit der Diagnose einer Medikamentenreaktion überein. Die Diagnosen waren Erythema multiforme (1 Hund, 1 Katze), lichenoide drug eruption (1 Hund), und Pemphigusähnliche drug eruption (1 Katze) Eine Reaktion auf Medikamente wurde bei sieben Hunden ausgeschlossen. In 15 Fällen war keine weitergehende klinische Information verfügbar. Bei den übrigen 27 Patienten konnte zwischen den Hautläsionen und den verabreichten Medikamenten ursächlicher Zusammenhang hergestellt werden, da die Hautläsionen auch durch andere gleichzeitig vorliegende Krankheiten hätten hervorgerufen worden sein könnenResumen En éste artículo se investigan 67 casos el los que las biopsias cutáneas, historia clínica y cambios histopatólogicos, indicaban la posibilidad de reacción adversa a la administración de medicamentos. Las lesiones histopatológicas de 39 perros, 19 gatos 2 cabras y un toro, se clasificaron en cinco grupos diferentes: eritem multiforme, necrólisis tóxica de la epidermis, dermatitis liquenoide interfásica (erupción liquenoide a la administración de medicamentos), vasculitis, y pémfigo foliáceo. En 53 casos se recibió información adicional de la historia clínica y chequeos periódicos.A niniguno de los pacientes se le volvió a administrar la medicación. Sólamente en 4 de los animales el exámen histopatológico correspondió con la diagnosis de reacción a la medicación. Las diagnosis resultaron ser: eritema multiforme, (un perro, y un gato), erupción liquenoide a la administración de medicamentos (un perro), y reacción de tipo penfigácea (un gato). Abstract—One hundred and twenty‐three cases of perifollicular melanosis out of 1182 cases with follicular or perifollicular inflammation were identified in a retrospective study of canine skin biopsy submissions to the Dermatology Service of the College of Veterinary Medicine. Generalized demodicosis accounted for the most cases (59 of 123 or 48.0%), but staphylococcal infection was also a common association (52 of 123 or 42.3%). Other diseases in which perifollicular melanosis was observed were pemphigus foliaceus or erythematosus, dermatophytosis, and subcorneal pustular dermatosis. Type of inflammation around affected hair follicles and relative number of demodectic mites per follicle did not appear to influence the presence of perifollicular melanosis. Because perifollicular melanosis was found in a high proportion of cases with generalized demodicosis (59 of 101 or 58.4%), the mites should be searched for when this histologic change is present.Résumé—Cent vingt trois cas de mélanose périfolliculaire ont été identifié parmi 1182 cas d'inflammation folliculaire ou périfolliculaire lors d'une étude rétrospective de biopsie cutanée analysées au Service de Dermatologie du Collège de Médecine Vétérinaire. La plupart des cas étaient des démodécies généralisée (59/123, 48%), mais les infections staphylococciques était aussi souvent associées (52/123, 42.3%). Les autres affections associées à une mélanoses périfolliculaire étaient: pemphigus foliacé ou érythémateux, dermatophytie, dermatose pustuleuse sous‐cornée. Le type d'inflammation au voisinage des follicules pileux atteints ou le nombre de demodex dans les follicules n'était pas en relation avec la présence d'une mélanose. Une mélanose périfolliculaire étant retrouvée dans de nombreux cas de démodécie généralisée (59/101, 58.4%), les parasites devraient être recherchés chaque fois que cette lésion histologique est observée.Zusammenfassung—Einhunderidreiundzwanzig Fälle von perifollikulärer Melanose aus einer Gesamizahl von 1182 Fällen mit follikulärer oder perifollikulärer Entzündung wurden in einer retrospektiven Studie über Einsendungen von Hundehaut‐Biopsien an das Dermatology Service des College of Veterinary Medicine ausgewertet. Für die meisten Fälle (59 von 123 oder 48,0%) war generalisierie Demodikose verantwortlich, in einem ebenfalls häufigen Zusammenhang stand die Staphylokokkeninfektion (52 von 123 oder 42.3%). Andre Krankheiten, bei denen perifollikuläre Melanose beobachtet werden konnte, waren Pemphigus foliaceus oder erythematosus, Hautpilzerkrankungen und die subcorneale eitrige Dermatitis. Die Art der Entzündung rund um betroffene Haarfollikel und die Anzahl von Demodexmilben je Follikel schien das Auftreten von perifollikulärer Melanose nicht zu beeinflussen. Da die perifollikuläre Melanose in einem hohen Ausmaß bei Fällen mit generalisierier Demodikose auftrat (S9 von 101 oder 58,4%), sollte man bei Vorhandensein dieses histologischen Bildes nach den Milben suchen.Resumen En un estudio retrospectivo se observó que de un total de 1182 casos de inflamación de tipo folicular o perifolicular de biopsias cutáneas analizadas por el departamento de dermatología del colegio de medicina veterinaria, en 123 casos, se diagnosticó melanosis perifolicular. La mayoría de los casos eran demodicosis generalizadas, (59 de 123 o 48.0%), aunque infección debida a estafilococos, también se encontró una causa frecuente, (52 de 123 o 42.3%). Otras enfermedades en las que se observó melanosis perifolicular fueron, pémfigo foliáceo o eritematoso, dermatofitosis y dermatosis pustular subcorneal. El tipo de inflamación que rodea el folículo piloso o el número de ácaros demodécticos perifoliculares, no apareció influenciar la presencia de malanosis perifolicular. Abstract—Multiple squamous cell carcinomasin situwere diagnosed in five aged cats. Despite clinical courses ranging from 18 to 30 months, there was no clinical or histologic evidence of breachment of the basement membrane. The condition closely resembles Bowen's disease in humans.Résumé—Des épithéliomas spinocellulaires multiplesin situont été diagnostiqués chez 5 chats. Maigré une anclenneté clinique de 18 à 30 mois, il n'y avait pas de signes cliniques ou histologiques d'atteinte de la membrane basale. Abstract—A castrated male domestic shorthair cat had a solitary cutaneous xanthogranuloma on an eyelid that was incompletely excised four times over a 3‐year period. During that period, a papilloma occurred on the same eyelid and was surgically excised and studied by histopathology and immunopathology. The exophytic papilloma contained intranuclear viral inclusion bodies that stained for deoxyribonucleic acid with the Feulgen technique. These bodies were positive for the papillomavirus capsid group specific antigens with an immunoperoxidase technique. This is the first report of an exophytic viral‐induced wart in a domestic cat.Résumé—Un chat européen mâle castréà poils courts a présenté un xanthogranulome isolé d'une paupière, excisé partiellement a quatre reprises sur une période de trois ans. Durant cette période, un papillome est apparu sur la même paupière. Il a été enlevé et étudié sur le plan histologique et immunopathologique. Le papillome exophytique contenait des inclusions virales qui étaient colorées, pour l'acide desoxyriboncléique, par la technique de Feulgen et positifs pour un antigéne de groupe de papillomavirus par une technique d'immunoperoxydase. Ceci est le premier cas rapporté de papillome exophytique viro‐induit chez un chat domestique.Zusammenfassung—Ein kastrierter Kurzhaarkater litt an einem solitären kutanen Xanthogranulom eines Augenlids, das innerhalb von 3 Jahren viermal unvollständig exzidiert wurde. Während dieser Zeit trat am gleichen Lid ein Papillom auf, das chirurgisch entfernt und histopathologisch und immunpathologisch untersucht wurde. Das exophytische Papillom enthielt intranukleäre Viruseinschlußköer, bei denen DNA mit der Feulgen‐Technik angefärbt werden konnte. Gleichzeitig fiel die Immunoperoxidase‐Technik auf das gruppenspezfische Antigen des Papillomviruskapsids positivaus. Dies ist die erste Beschreibung einer exophytischen, virusinduzierten Warze bei einer Hausktaze.Resumen Un gato macho castrado, de raza doméstica de pelo corto, presentó un xantogranuloma cutáneo aislado en un párpado, que fué removido quirurgicamente cuatro veces de una manera incompleta en un periodo de 3 años. Durante este periodo, un papiloma apareció en el mismo párpado, el cual fue removido quirurgicamente y sometido a investigación histo e inmunopatológica. El papiloma exofítico contenía cuerpos de inclusión vírica que se tiñeron con ácido desoxiribonucleico, por medio de la técnica de Feulgen, y que resultó positivo para el grupo de antigenos especificos de la capsida del papilomavirus con la técnica de inmunoperoxidasa. Abstract—The clinical and histopathological features of five cases of a chronic pruritic dermatitis in dogs infected withDirofilaria immitiswere analysed. Clinically, the cutaneous syndrome was characterized by a papulo‐nodular and/or ulcerative non‐specific dermatitis, responsive to antiparasitic treatment. Histopathologically, an angiocentric and pyogranulomatous dermatitis associated with the presence of microfilariae was the most frequently seen lesion. Immunohistochemical studies revealed a positive immunoreaction of microfilariae with anti‐IgG serum and a negative reaction with anti‐IgM, anti‐IgA and anti‐C3 sera. Diagnosis of thisD. immitis‐associated dermatitis was based on (1) clinical signs; (2) the presence of circulating microfilariae; (3) perivascular and granulomatous reactions associated with the parasites; (4) the response to antiparasitic treatment; and (5) the absence of other aetiological agents. A type II hypersensitive reaction is proposed as the possible pathogenic mechanism.Résumé—On a réalisé l'analyse histo‐pathologique de 5 cas de dermatite prurigineuse chronique chez des chiens atteints deD. immitis.Du point de vue clinique, le syndrome cutané se caractérisait par una dermatite nodulaire papuleuse et/ou ulcéreuse non‐spécifique comme réponse un traitement antiparasite. Du point de vue histo‐pathologique, la lésion commune était une dermatite angiocentrique et pyogranulomateuse associée à la presence de microfilariae. La diagnostique de cetteD. immitisassociée à la dermatite se basait sur (1) les signes clinques, (2) la presence de microfilariae circulatoires, (3) des réactions périvasculaires et granulomateuses associées aux parasites, (4) la réponse à un traitement antiparasite et (5) l'absence d'autres agents étiologigues.Zusammenfassung—In fünf Fällen wurden die klinischen und histopathologischen Eigenschaften bei Hunden mit chronischer pruriginöser Dermatitis, infiziert mitD. immitis, analysiert. Klinisch zeichnet sich das kutane Syndrom durch Hautknötchen und/oder ulzerierter, nicht spezifizierter Dermatitis aus, die eine Antiparasiten‐Behandlung anspricht. Histopathologisch ist die häufig auftretende Verletzung eine angiozentrische und pyogranulomatöse Dermatitis, begleitet von einer Microfilariae.
