The development of HCG-stimulated pseudopregnancy in the rabbit was studied with histological, electronmicroscopic and biochemical methods. This included the fate of the secretion unfertilized ova on the one hand and an analysis of the pseudopregnant endometrial secretion on the other. The unfertilized ova degenerate during pseudopregnancy, over half of these ova can be found in the uterus between the 4th and the 11th day after injection of HCG, the others are probably aborted. Endometrial secretion appears much sooner during the HCG-induced pseudopregnancy than in a normal pregnancy. The picture of maximal secretory capacity is maintained in the pseudopregnant cavum epithelium at least as long as in a normal pre-implantation pregnancy, i.e. up to the 7th day post coitum. The 11-day endometrium is no longer secretory active.During the secretory peak the pseudopregnant cavum epithelium exhibits a great number of apical protrusions, just as in normal pregnancy. With the electron microscope it was possible to demonstrate these protrusions as cell compartments rich in cytoplasm. The development of the pseudopregnant endometrial protein secretion is not identical with the normal one.The present results of differences between normal pregnancy and pseudopregnancy after stimulation with chorion gonadotropin provide further indications that the still unimplanted rabbit blastocyst must connect itself to the maternal regulating circuits before implantation. This is to adapt the intra-uterine environment to the growth and developmental requirements of the embryo and in order to synchronize the former with the embryonic system. The reactions of the external developmental factors do not proceed fully autonomously, but must to some extent be triggered off by the embryo itself.

摘要:
The paired flank glands of golden hamsters are larger and more pigmented in males than females. In the male, but not in the female, castration results in a sharp decrease in size and pigmentation of the flank gland. The response of the flank gland in the male is linear to the log doses of 0.01-0.25 mg testosterone propionate injected every other day. Testosterone propionate also induces enlargement and increased pigmentation of the female flank gland. Estradiol benzoate is without effect in either sex. The androgen sensitivity of the flank gland makes this organ a useful index of endogenous androgenlevels.

In an adult with a virilizing adrenocortical adenoma and in six similar published instances, the high levels of urinary 17-ketosteroids usually present were associated with normal excretion of 17(OH)corticosteroids or Porter-Silber chromogens. Urinary estrogens were high in 1 of 3 patients. In 5 of 9 adult patients assembled from the literature virilization in association with an adrenal cancer was characterized by increased levels of urinary 17(OH)corticosteroids; also, urinary estrogens were high in each of the 4 patients in whom they were measured. The above data point to a variety of enzyme patterns of steroidogenesis in association with virilizing adrenal tumors in adults. Thus, in those with an adenoma, desmolase activity is increased with high androgen production from 17(OH)steroids and normal or high estrogen formation from androgens without an increase in 17(OH)corticosteroid excretion. In those with an adrenal cancer, 17(OH)corticosteroid output is increased in about one half, androgen synthesis is of course always high, and, judging from the cases cited, estrogen production is invariably high. The basal levels of urinary 17-ketosteroids appear to be of no aid in the identification of virilization in adults due to an adrenal adenoma and that resulting from an adrenal cancer. The data indicate that cancer is more likely if in addition to high urinary 17-ketosteroids, the levels of 17(OH)corticosteroids and of estrogens are abnormally elevated in urine.

The plasma thyrotropin levels were determined in 35 children, aged 5 to 30 months, who were suffering from severe malnutrition due to socioeconomic factors. Plasma thyrotropin hormone was found to be normal in patients with the marasmic-kwashiorkor type of malnutrition (0.20 ± 0.07 mU/ml) and moderately decreased in those with the marasmic type (0.13 ± 0.04 mU/ml), despite the tendency to low levels of protein-bound iodine and thyroxine. Some patients also had abnormal amounts of the hormonally inactive precursors monoiodotyrosine and diiodotyrosine circulating in their plasma. Oral administration of pregnenolone-16α-carbonitrile (PCN) to intact thyro-parathyroidectomized or L-thyroxine- treated rats causes an increase of smooth-surfaced endoplasmic reticulum (SER) in hepatocytes. The steroid carbonitrile reduces zoxazolamine paralysis time, and this effect is not modified by L-thyroxine. Hepatocellular SER proliferation, induced by PCN, does not seem to be affected by the thyroid and parathyroid glands
