SummarySolvent abuse, a practice more commonly known as glue sniffing is not a new phenomenon. It has been practised by children and adolescents in America and elsewhere since the late 1950s.The aims of this review were to provide information about the demographic characteristics of solvent sniffers, to look at the extent of the practice, to determine the sociological factors associated with it and to detail the effects, particularly the toxic effects of adhesives and other substances, the vapours of which could be deliberately inhaled. The findings are discussed.

SummaryAs an attempt to gauge the sensitivity of questionnaires designed to detect alcoholism two parallel studies were conducted. In the first all persons who had been interviewed during a community survey investigation of alcoholism were screened against the hospital records of the psychiatric services which covered the survey area. It was found that less than 50 per cent of known active ‘alcoholics’ and known active ‘problem drinkers’ were detected by the survey questionnaire.On the second study all persons identified as either ‘problem drinkers’ or ‘alcoholics’ in the original community study were re‐interviewed using the same questionnaire (the CBQ) plus two established alcoholism screening tests (the SMAST and CAGE). It was found that whereas the CAGE and CBQ showed good agreement in detecting the same people as being ‘alcoholic’, the SMAST appeared to screen out only the more severe cases. SummaryAlthough aftercare following a specified treatment event is gaining popularity, its effect on long term outcome is uncertain. Cross‐lagged panel analysis (correlation) and path analysis (standardised partial regression) are two methods to examine the relationship. These methods were used to describe the aftercare—outcome effect at two points in time, one and two years following inpatient treatment of 37 Caucasian male alcoholics. Since many treated substance abusers are unable or unwilling to totally and permanently abstain from all substances after being treated, and since some treated substance abusers are able to drink and/or take drugs without abusing them, both total and permanent abstinence and controlled use should be discussed as potentially viable treatment outcomes while substance abusers are in treatment. The complexities of controlled use are articulated to the increasing problem of multiple substance abuse. Guidelines are suggested for determining who, what substance(s), under what conditions controlled use could be attempted, and how to evaluate the psychobiosocial consequences of this treatment outcome.
