AbstractBy introducing a set of matrix transformations, the algebraic Riccati equation (ARE) is converted into a ‘dual’ matrix quadratic equation (DARE) where the unknown belongs to the field of skew‐symmetric matrices. As a consequence of this reformulation for a matrix space Rnxnthe system ofn(n+ 1)/2 coupled quadratic equations associated to ARE is shown to be equivalent to another system ofn(n‐1)/2 coupled quadratic equations. An efficient computational algorithm is given for solving the dual Riccati equation and closed form analytical solutions of ARE are derived for the case in whichn=2 or when some special, but non‐trivial, commutativity conditions are fulfilled in the transfor

AbstractThe closed‐loop optimal control of a linear, time‐invariant, singularly perturbed discrete system is considered. The resulting matrix Riccati difference equation is formulated in the singularly perturbed structure. It is observed that the degeneration affects some of the final conditions of the Riccati equation. A singular perturbation method is developed to obtain approximate solutions in terms of an outer series and a final correction series. The outer series takes advantage of the order reduction associated with degeneration and the correction series takes care of the affected final conditions. AbstractThe linear‐quadratic‐Gaussian problem of quantized control subject to quantized measurements is considered with the measurement and control quantizers formulated as data compression systems. The optimum closed‐loop control is shown to be separable in control law, control quantizer and estimation. However, estimation and measurement quantization are non‐separable. The optimum measurement quantizer is of a differential structure but requires optimum state estimation at both encoder and decoder. A fixed total number of quantization levels should be equally allocated to the measurement and control quantizers, and the quantizer design depends on both the known control law and the solution to the matrix Riccati equation. A suboptimum control structure is developed, and the effect of quantization error on estimation error is shown to be

AbstractMachine maintenance policies comprise two important activities: (a) the performance of preventive maintenance to prevent or postpone future breakdowns; and (b) the decision once a breakdown has actually occurred either to repair or to junk the machine. In this paper we study a control‐theoretic model in which both of these activities are decision variables. The optimal preventive maintenance policy is determined as an ordinary control variable, whereas the breakdown‐repair policy is determined as an impulsive control variable. A real‐time iterative procedure is presented for making the repair‐or‐junk decision at the time of each actual breakdown.
