摘要:
The mechanism of wear of marginally lubricated metal surfaces was investigated under high nominal pressure, low speed, and small amplitude reciprocating sliding. Oxygen-free high-conductivity (OFHC) copper was slid against HY100 steel, alloy 718, and OFHC copper counterfaces in an “inert” mineral oil environment. The results have shown that the mechanism of friction in steady state was plowing. The depth of deformed region in the copper bearing specimen was proportional to the coefficient of friction. Moreover, the wear was related to the friction coefficient by a fourth-power relationship.

摘要:
An ester lubricant base oil containing one or more standard additives to protect against wear, corrosion, and oxidation was used in an experimental ball/plate elastohydrodynamic contact under load and speed conditions such as to induce scuffing failure in short times. Both the ball and the plate were of identically treated M-50 steel. After various periods of operating time, the wear track on the plate was examined (a) with an interference microscope of ± 30 Å depth resolution and (b) sometimes also with a scanning ellipsometer, and (c) a scanning Auger spectrometer. The optically deduced surface profiles varied with wavelength, indicating the presence of surface coatings, which were confirmed by the other instrumentations. As scuffing was approached, a thin (∼40 Å) oxide layer and a carbide layer formed in the wear track, in particular, when tricresylphosphate antiwear additive was present in the lubricant. The rates of the formation of these layers and their reactivity toward dilute alcoholic HCl depended strongly on the lubricant and additives. Based on these results, suggestions for improved formulations and a test method for bearing reliability could be proposed.Presented as an American Society of Lubrication Engineers paper at the ASLE/ASME Lubrication Conference in San Diego, California, October 22–24, 1984

摘要:
In a previous paper (1), the “ringing” phenomena in a water pump seal was experimentally analyzed. We reached the conclusion that the ringing sound was generated by the “stick-slip” phenomena attributed to both the lubrication characteristics of the sealing surfaces and also the vibration characteristics of the rotating shaft system.

摘要:
Hydrostatic noncontact seals are becoming more widely used as shaft seals for high-pressure water pumps. This work shows that the hydrodynamic pressure head (ρ · u2/2), where ρ is fluid density) should not be ignored in such seals where leakage velocity, u, is high. This “inertia” effect causes a change of pressure profile on the seal surface and affects force equilibrium and the seal separation.

摘要:
Friction and wear experiments were conducted with elemental iron sliding on aluminum oxide in aerated sulfuric acid at concentrations ranging from very dilute (7 × 10−5N; i.e., 4 ppm) to very concentrated (96 percent acid). Load and reciprocating sliding speed were kept constant. With the most dilute acid concentration of 7 × 10−5to 2 × 10−4N, a complex corrosion product formed that was friable and often increased friction and wear. At slightly higher concentrations of 0.001 N, metal losses were essentially by wear alone. Because no buildup of corrosion products occurred, this acid concentration became the standard from which to separate metal loss from direct corrosion and mechanical wear losses. When the acid concentration was increased to 5 percent (1 N), the well-established high corrosion rate of iron in sulfuric acid strongly dominated the total wear loss. This strong corrosion increased to 30 percent acid and decreased somewhat to 50 percent acid in accordance with expectations. However, the low corrosion of iron expected at acid concentrations of 65 to 96 percent was not observed in the wear area: It was apparent that the normal passivating film was being worn away and a galvanic cell established that rapidly attacked the wear area. Under the conditions where direct corrosion losses were highest, the coefficient of friction was the lowest.Presented as an American Society of Lubrication Engineers paper at the ASLE/ASME Lubrication Conference in San Diego, California, October 22–24, 1984

摘要:
Experiments have been carried out on a relatively simple journal bearing rig to test the theory that extra load-carrying capacity is generated the elasticity of viscoelastic lubricants. Model lubricants were used. The viscoelastic lubricants were solutions of high-molecular-weight polyisobutene in low-molecular-weight polyisobutene while the inelastic lubricant was low-molecular-weight polyisobutene.

摘要:
This paper presents an analytical study of dynamic characteristics of half-elliptical pressure dam bearings. One half (either upper or lower) of these bearings is elliptical, while the other half is circular. A step or pressure dam is cut in the upper half bearing surface. The lower half bearing surface is provided with a deep groove or relief-track.

摘要:
An electrochemical cell was constructed to explore the possible radical anion forming behavior of a thioether liquid lubricant. The electrochemical behavior of the thioether was compared with the electrochemical behavior of biphenyl, which is known to form radical anions. Under controlled conditions, biphenyl undergoes a reversible reaction to a radical anion, whereas the thioether undergoes an irreversible reduction yielding several products. These results are discussed in relationship to boundary lubrication.Presented as an American Society of Lubrication Engineers paper at the ASLE/ASME Lubrication Conference in San Diego, California, October 22–24, 1984

摘要:
A model for the analysis of creep and stress relaxation in wound magnetic tape is presented. It is wed to predict anelastic deformation in the tape caused by initial winding stresses and geometric deformations imposed on it. The formulation assumes quasistatic, linearly viscoelastic properties and is implemented through a finite-element discretization of the governing equilibrium equation.

摘要:
Progress in rolling-contact fatigue life of bearing steels encourages the reduction in size of bearings. This can lead to situations in which the bearing suffers from excessive loading. Core fracture of carburized rollers of bearings by excessive loading was investigated. The higher the core hardness, the less the core fracture happens. The critical stress amplitude at the center of the core for the core fracture was obtained in relation to core hardness.Presented as an American Society of Lubrication Engineers paper at the ASLE/ASME Lubrication Conference in San Diego, California, October 22–24, 1984
