摘要:
A computer program was developed to calculate the load capacity of the hydrodynamic forces generated within an incompressible fluid film by a shrouded Rayleigh step pad for application in a radial seal design. The program makes use of the central-difference operator, defined for cylindrical coordinates, to approximate the pressure gradient over the pad. Solution of the lubrication equation with the centrifugal inertia effect included is achieved by employing a noniterative numerical routine. Pressure maps and flow fields based on the geometry for a Rayleigh pad were obtained. Results indicate that the selection of a pad geometry such that the design load intersects the dimensionless load capacity curve at a separation ratio between two and four will yield the most favorable operating characteristics, i.e., the best trade-off between high load capacity, high film stiffness, high tangential flow, and a minimum temperature rise.Presented at the 27th ASLE Annual Meeting in Houston, Texas, May 1–4, 1972

摘要:
A research program is described which was carried out to establish the causes of interseal pressure occurring on pistons or in glands of hydraulic equipment when using pairs of seals with back-up rings. Three fractional factorial test programs are described using various configurations of seals and back-up rings, the results indicating several important geometrical factors affecting the inward pumping of the seal. The results indicated the importance of the inlet film profile of the seal. The addition of a back-up ring to the low pressure side of the seal effectively alters the inlet profile and reduces or eliminates the inward pumping of the seal.

摘要:
In this work it has been shown experimentally that the temperature stability in friction of a highly purified oil with a fatty-acid additive is comparable to the surface energy of adhesion of the given oil, in the case of tests conducted with a group of iron-base ternary alloys, having a constant carbon content, and different alloying element contents (of chromium, tungsten, or nickel).Presented as an American Society of Lubrication Engineers paper at the ASME/ASLE International Lubrication Conference held in New York City, October 9–12, 1972

摘要:
When tested by the four-ball extreme-pressure procedure, oil solutions oft-octyl chloride at the 2 percent chlorine level rated approximately equal to oil solutions of di-t-octyl disulfide at the 2 percent sulfur level, and both of these additive blends rated better thann-octyl chloride in oil at the 2 percent chlorine level or di-n-octyl disulfide in oil at the 2 percent sulfur level.n-Octyl chloride and di-n-octyl disulfide in oil at corresponding concentrations of active element were approximately equivalent in additive action.t-Octyl chloride was almost as good at the 1 percent as at the 2 percent chlorine level. Mixtures of di-t-octyl disulfide andt-octyl chloride in oil at the level 1 percent S-1 percent Cl rated approximately twice as well as di-t-octyl disulfide (2 percent S) ort-octyl chloride (2 percent Cl). Some finer points of the action of these additives were investigated by studying time-connected behavior at 50-kg and 100-kg loads. The action of the additives cannot be explained on the basis of their chemical structures only; interactions with the rubbing process in the four-ball machine also must be considered.Presented as an American Society of Lubrication Engineers paper at the ASME/ASLE International Lubrication Conference held in New York City, October 9–12, 1972

摘要:
A means is suggested by which a stepped thrust bearing can be adapted so that it operates at or near its optimum operating condition over a wide range of applied load. It is shown theoretically that when the outlet step is mounted on an elastic foundation of the correct stiffness, the changes in step height with load enable the bearing to operate with a greater outlet film thickness at high loads than can be obtained with the conventional bearing. Several practical arrangements for the construction of these bearings are suggested.Presented as an American Society of Lubrication Engineers paper at the ASME/ASLE International Lubrication Conference held in New York City, October 9–12, 1972

In order to satisfy the growing request in solid lubrication for high temperatures, new solid lubricants are being developed. In this field the “quasi” solid lubricants and the soft nonabrasive film-forming lubricants constitute two important families.

摘要:
A theoretical derivation has yielded a general expression for the operating torque of a tapered roller bearing under pure thrust load. Experimental data have been obtained to enable determination of the constant and exponents to make this expression usable. Further theoretical analysis has extended the use of the thrust load equation to pure radial and combined radial and thrust loads. Comparison of calculated and measured operating torques under radial load has verified the theoretical derivation.

摘要:
Using the recently developed hydrostatic disc machine, a new form of gear lubricant failure has been investigated. This is called fatigue scoring and is caused by microcracks and micropits forming in the surface of heavily loaded surfaces, which drain away the oil in the contact. It is shown that failure is viscosity sensitive: the lower the viscosity, the lower the resistance to scoring. The correct choice of EP additive can raise the scoring load considerably, providing the additive is so chosen that it is active at the running temperature of the gear surface.Presented as an American Society of Lubrication Engineers paper at the ASME/ASLE International Lubrication Conference held in New York City, October 9–12, 1972

摘要:
An investigation of the static adhesion between cobalt-50 iron and cobalt-25 molybdenum-10 chromium alloy couples under ultraclean conditions has provided an excellent correlation between adhesion data and the dynamic coefficient of friction data as provided by independent experiments. When the materials and conditions of experiment were identical, the dynamic coefficient of friction which was predicted from the static adhesion data for Co-50Fe was given as f = 1.2 and that value observed was f = 1.2 – 1.3. Similarly, the predicted coefficient of friction for the Co-25 Mo-10 Cr alloy was 0.31 and observed was f = 0.25.
