摘要:
ABSTRACTA 20‐year‐old male patient with bilateral facioscapulohumeral dystrophy was admitted to the Ankara University Department of Prosthetics and Orthotics for orthotic treatment. In the physical examination, the patient's bilateral limitation in active glenohumeral range of motion, decrease in muscle strength around the shoulder, and marked scapular protraction and elevation were present. A scapulothoracic fixation orthosis was designed in our laboratory to reduce scapular winging and thus improve the patient's active range of motion of the shoulder. This new orthosis was compared with other orthoses for scapular winging and found to be superior in terms of active shoulder range of motion and muscle strength.

摘要:
ABSTRACTThis clinical investigation was undertaken to determine whether biomechanical foot orthoses (BFOs) can be used as first‐line treatment of patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) within a family practice/sports medicine office setting. During a 36‐month period from November 1995 through October 1998, those patients meeting the criteria for diagnosis and treatment of PFPS were prescribed BFOs as a first‐line treatment if their knee pain occurred before, during, and after exercise (grade 3 pain) or if their knee pain prevented athletes/patients from participating in any form of exercise (grade 4 pain). Six months after the BFOs were properly fitted, each patient was sent a questionnaire to determine the outcome of treatment. On a scale from 1 (least painful) to 10 (most painful), the weighted average preBFO level of pain was 7.34 and 6 months later the weighted average pain level was 2.46. The overall weighted average knee‐pain reduction was 4.9 (67% across the full range of patients). On the basis of this retrospective investigation, there are firm indications that high‐quality, consistently fabricated BFOs offer athletes/patients a cost‐effective first‐line mode of treatment for PFPS of moderate to severe degree.

摘要:
ABSTRACTAn easy‐to‐build and inexpensive device was developed to assess walking speed. The device measured to a best resolution of 0.001 second the time interval between the triggering of two dual beam photoelectric intrusion‐detection systems positioned 12.0 m apart. A preliminary study on a population of three normal subjects demonstrated that the variance in the time to walk between the detectors was greater than the resolution of the measurement system, thus the resolution of the device was adequate for walking applications. Potentially, this device could be used to assess postoperative patient progress and functional outcome.

摘要:
ABSTRACTThis article discusses a comparison of ankle kinematic and kinetic data and the energy efficiency of two different prosthetic designs for a 16‐year‐old girl with bilateral transtibial amputations. Kinematic and kinetic data were obtained by having the patient walk at a normal, self‐selected walking speed and wear the old prosthetic and then the new prosthetic. With the new prosthetic design, we noted that the patient displayed significantly greater sagittal plane ankle motion and ankle power, resulting in a higher ratio of energy efficiency. Because the patient has bilateral below‐knee amputations, the changes noted cannot be attributed to an uninvolved extremity's compensating for an involved extremity.
