Although many studies have been carried out on prosthetic gait, the main parameters of below-knee amputee (BKA) gait are still poorly understood. The majority of the gait studies of amputees have focused on the temporal and distance variables, whereas kinetics of the gait may reveal more important information. The purpose of this study was to assess the prosthetic gait of transtibial amputees and compare it with the findings of other studies on BKA and able-bodied persons. Five male unilateral traumatic BKA between the ages of 32 and 77 years were tested. Ground reaction force data were combined with simultaneously recorded and subsequently digitized video data of coordinate motion to calculate joint kinetics data. The following variables were compared within the group and with those of nonamputees: linear velocity, relative angles, net moment, power, and work at the hip, knee, and ankle joints. The results of this study indicated that BKA perform a higher than normal hip extension, knee flexion, and ankle dorsiflexion of the unaffected side, whereas having more than normal hip and knee flexion during stance on the affected side. It was also shown that amputees tend to generate little power during push-off of the prosthetic side. Major findings of this study confirmed that BKA perform an asymmetrical gait that is different from those of normal population.

Currently, there exist numerous orthotic options used all over the world in the conservative management of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. A common denominator among this group is their rigid nature and limitation on spine motion. Each TLSO also implements some degree of increased intra-abdominal pressure in order to decrease the axial load on the spine for the corrective forces to be effective. Literature on the conservative management of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis is reviewed to determine the biomechanics and effectiveness of current treatments.Seven patients are reviewed who have been wearing the Spinecor orthosis to determine its effectiveness against the progression of scoliosis in the immature spine. The Spinecor is also compared with existing protocols to determine their differences biomechanically.This article examines a new concept for the conservative management of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis in order to introduce new concepts of flexibility and the absence of intra-abdominal pressure in the orthosis.

The involvement of psychologists in medical settings has grown at a tremendous rate in recent years, with an ever-increasing number of medical environments developing and promoting interdisciplinary collaboration, and thus enabling psychologists to extend their practice beyond the traditional mental health model. In the context of prosthetic and orthotic practice, we suggest that the realization of the potential of technological innovations in this field may only fully be achieved by equipping prosthetists and orthotists not only with the technical expertise they require but also by fostering an awareness of the importance of psychosocial issues in amputation and rehabilitation, and an understanding of the psychological complexities pertaining to the therapeutic context. Rehabilitation after amputation is fundamentally dependent on the patient’s psychological adjustment to the injury; hence, practitioners’ sensitivity to psychosocial issues has clear practical implications both for successful prosthetic fitting and rehabilitation, and for continuing development and innovation in the discipline. This article highlights a number of key psychosocial issues of particular relevance to prosthetic and orthotic practice and of special importance to the rehabilitation of the amputee.

The Prosthetics and Orthotics Department at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) in Vancouver, Canada, has recently completed a visioning process which was done as part of a curriculum review. This report presents and discusses the key points emerging from the process. It is anticipated that the results of the visioning process will provide a basis for a major curriculum revision to the BCIT’s prosthetics and orthotics program.

The National Center for Training and Education in Prosthetics and Orthotics, based in the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, offered Postgraduate Diploma courses by distance learning between 1991 and 2000. In September 2000, the National Center discontinued the Postgraduate Diploma courses and introduced a new suite of Postgraduate Courses in Rehabilitation Studies leading to the award of either a Master of Science degree, Postgraduate Diploma, or Postgraduate Certificate. As with the previous courses, these courses are modular and intended for off-campus delivery. They are offered by open learning to allow participants to study at their own pace, in their own homes, at times convenient to them. This paper reviews these developments in postgraduate education.

The purpose of this article is to provide the orthotist with a comprehensive review of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and its orthotic considerations. A detailed description of the neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, and neuropathology are presented to improve the overall comprehension of how the brain responds to trauma. Throughout the paper, examples will be given to provide applicable clinical scenarios. Upon completion of this review, the reader should posses a clear working knowledge of TBI and its orthotic applications.

The patient population who elects electrically powered prosthetic intervention is limited, as are the practitioners who have sufficient experience to meet the patients’ myriad of goals. Maximizing a patient’s rehabilitation potential when using an electrically powered prosthesis involves several critical success factors. Formation of a rehabilitation plan via a team approach insures that all aspects of care are addressed simultaneously and is essential to a positive result that includes significant improvement in function and long-term prosthetic use. This paper examines aspects that should be considered while formulating and executing an electrically powered prosthetic rehabilitation plan.
