摘要:
The theory of extreme values finds many applications in modern technology. This paper is an attempt to unfold the basic elements of the theory. Frequent examples are given to illustrate both derivations and application.

摘要:
This paper presents a method for determining the reliability of large, complex systems. Repair is an integral part of the model proposed and the usual assumption of component independence need not be made. Recognizing the stochastic nature of an electronic system operating in time, the reliability of any system is defined in terms of a suitable stochastic process. This enables the use of powerful probabilistic techniques which have been developed in recent years. In particular, the theory of Markov processes can be readily applied. Given component repair and failure parameters, the reliability of the system at any specified time as well as the limiting reliability can easily be obtained. If the reliability requirement for the system is given, it is a routine matter to determine permissible values for the mean time to repair and the mean time to failure of each component.

摘要:
This paper presents a new table and some approximating polynomials especially designed to facilitate maximum likelihood estimation of the parameters of the gamma distribution, and also applicable to the a-parameter Type V; it discusses methods of computing the sampling variances of the likelihood estimators; it illustrates the use of the tables in a numerical example; it mentions applications to the Erlang distribution and difficulties of application to the general Type III. Finally it inquires when the numbers extracted from the tables are maximum likelihood estimates, and what they are estimates of.

摘要:
The problem of time trends is frequently present in chemical processes. Experimental designs which can be used in these situations have been developed by several workers. The designs of D. R. Cox are restricted to a few levels and can be used with both qualitative or quantitative variables. The randomly oriented designs of G. E. P. Box are useful when all of the variables are quantitative. Both of these types of designs presuppose the fitting of a first-order model to the data. Combinations of these designs can be made which allow the study of both qualitative and quantitative variables in the same experiment. Designs which permit the fitting of a polynomial response are available for one variable problem. Problems involving two variables can be handled by the proper combination of randomly oriented firstorder designs. Satisfactory designs for situations involving more than two independent variables and a polynomial response of second order or higher are not presently available. Further work in this area will be of interest to experimenters in the physical sciences.

摘要:
It is frequently useful to test, on the basis of life test data, whether or not one is justified in assuming that the underlying distribution of life is exponential. This paper, which appears in two parts, describes a number of graphical and analytical procedures for testing this assumption. Part I of the paper contains descriptions of the mathematical and graphical procedures. Part II contains several worked examples.

摘要:
The method of maximum likelihood is employed to estimate the binomial parameterpwhenever an erroneous observation or report results in recordingcdefective samples when there are actuallyc+ 1. The proportion of such erroneous observations is also estimated, and asymptotic variances and covariances of the estimates are obtained. A numerical example is included.
