SummaryAmong cases with hallucinatory and delusional states, two cases with rapid onset, hypotension and slight disturbance of consciousness were studied. Under hallucinatory and delusional states, EEG showed low amplitude rapid waves. Administration of haloperidol with arousal action caused disappearance of hallucination and delusion as well as rapid waves, indicated the role of decreased activity of lower brain area in the development of hallucinatory and delusional states.In addition to the disturbance of emotional and volitional aspect, hallucination and delusion in schizophrenia might also be concerned with disharmony of activities of lower brain and cerebral cortex.

Summary1) Using a single click as the warning stimulus (S1), a yellow‐colored light as the imperative stimulus (S2) and a button‐press as the motor‐response (MR), conventional (paradigm of S1‐S2‐MR) and motor‐response‐deprived (S1‐S2) CNVs were recorded in 16 normal subjects.2) Motor‐response‐deprived CNV or MRD‐CNV generated before the reinforcement seems to relate to the process of S1‐information or S1‐signalization.3) The easiness of the conditioning, involving the reinforced conditioning and conditioned emotional response, was considered to relate to the development of CNV.4) Because of higher amplitude of MRD‐CNV in female subjects, we concluded that females may have the biological natu

SummaryData reported in this brief communication suggest that, despite pronounced manic behavior, morning urinary excretion levels of 17‐OHCS was reduced. 24‐hour urinary 17‐OHCS value was subsequently lowered in six manic patients studied. Amplitude of the diurnal fall in the urinary 17‐OHCS excretion levels was also slightly reduced but not significantly. These factors did not result in an absolute loss of the circadian curve of urinary 17‐OHCS excretion. SummaryWe studied four cases of intermediate or marginal types of alcoholic hallucinosis. According to the clinical features, they are classified as follows:(1) A group close to delirium tremens, where alcohol withdrawal plays an important role, and the duration of symptom is short.(2) A group close to involutional depression or paraphrenia with syntonic personality, where depressive mood exists on the basis of paranoid symptom.(3) A group close to schizophrenia, especially paranoid type.

SummaryContent of calcium, manganese and aluminum in CNS tissue was measured by neutron activation analysis in four ALS and three control cases with the following results:(1) The increase in calcium and aluminum contents in CNS tissue of ALS cases were found with localization of these metals in the degenerated areas of ALS while manganese content showed no significant difference between ALS and controls.(2) Two of the four ALS cases showed a positive correlation between calcium and manganese and the other two ALS cases between calcium and aluminum, while all three control cases showed no correlation between these metals.(3) These findings suggest that the degenerative changes in ALS may be due to soft tissue calcification with interaction of other metals such as aluminum, manganese, and so on.(4) The importance of the possibility of aluminum participation in a calcifying process producing degeneration was emphasized in terms of the etiology of ALS.

SummaryMale Wistar rats were isolated either immediately after weaning or in adulthood. Then they were decapitated at the last day of the 1st, 3rd, 6th, 9th, 12th and 15th week of isolation and the levels of NA, DA and 5‐HT on whole brains except cerebellum were assayed simultaneously by fluorimetric procedure.When isolation was started immediately after weaning, isolated rats had significantly higher level of brain NA than that of control grouped rats at the 6th and 9th week of isolation and then the brain NA level was reduced to control level, on the other hand when isolation was started in adulthood, brain NA level did not change significantly between the two groups. Brain DA level in isolated rats increased significantly both at the 9th week in post‐weaning rats and at the 12th week in young‐adult rats. Brain 5‐HT level did not change significantly by isolation either immediately after weaning nor in adulthood. As for regional distribution of monoamine levels, rats isolated for nine weeks at weaning had significantly increased NA and DA levels in the situs that the cell bodies of noradrenergic and dopaminergic neurons were located.Namely, it was found that different effect of isolation on the level of brain NA occurred by the difference of age when social isolation had been started, and these data were confirmed by repeate

SummaryRepeated application of electrical stimulation to amygdala results in the progressive development and elaboration of clinical and electrographic seizures (kindling). The rate of kindling was compared in control rats and rats with various amounts of damage to the forebrain commissures. Partial or total tran‐section of corpus callosum, hippocampal commissure, and anterior commissure did not retard the rate of kindled seizure development. In the few cases in which a retarded rate of kindling was observed, there was always evidence of unintended damage to rostral thalamic nuclei; no such damage was seen in forebrain‐bisected rats that kindled at control rates. These results indicate that the forebrain commissures do not play an essential role in amygdaloid kindling, and they suggest that nuclei in the rostral thala‐mus may participate in this pheno

SummaryThe postmortem changes (0.5, 1, 2, 3, 5, 7 and 10 hours) in pyramidal neurons of the area CAI of the hippocampus of rats have been studied with the light and electron microscope.1. (light microscopy) In the pyramidal neurons that have undergone 0.5‐ and 1‐hour postmortem autolysis (postmortem autolysis for 0.5 and 1 hours), no remarkable changes were found. In the neurons which had undergone 2‐ or 3‐hour postmortem autolysis, nuclei were slightly edematous and the perineuronal spaces were slightly disintegrated. In the neurons which had undergone more than 5‐hour postmortem autolysis, these changes were more prominent.2. (electron microscopy) The aggregation of the nuclear chromatin was already observed in the neurons which had undergone 0.5‐ or 1‐hour postmortem autolysis. In the cytoplasm, the swelling of mitochondria, Golgi vesicles and the disintegration tion of myelin sheath were partly observed in the neurons which had undergone 0.5‐hour postmortem autolysis. Within 1‐hour postmortem period, the dilatation of the endoplasmic reticulum in the neurons and the swelling of the processes of astrocytes were distinguishable. These alterations proceeded gradually in the course of time.
