Single case research is proposed as a valuable means of involving counselors in the research process, providing feedback to the counselor and supervisor and gathering accountability data. Yet relatively little research of this type is conducted. One reason for this paucity of single case research is a lack of familiarity. If one is familiar with single case research, it is usually with case study methodologies and not with the intensiveNof 1 designs. The purpose of this article is to familiarize the reader with the two major types of intensiveNof 1 designs: experimental and association. Several different examples of each are presented in hopes of stimulating usage.

The effects of yoking role‐play practice to modeling treatments designed to teach the rudimentary counseling skill of reflection of feeling were investigated. Twenty‐eight novice counselors‐in‐training were randomly assigned to one of the four treatment conditions: written model, videotape model, written model plus role‐play practice, and videotape model plus role‐play practice. Effectiveness was measured by ratings of students' oral responses to 16 videotaped client vignettes. The multivariate analyses revealed that although there were no significant differences between the two modeling conditions without role‐play practice, there were significant differences between students who received an opportunity to role‐play practice and those who did not. From the results of the analyses, it was concluded that role‐play practice significantly enhanced the effectiveness of the written model but not the video model. This article presents a conceptual framework and explores the results and implications of practicum research published from 1975–1982. Forty‐two studies were found pertaining directly to practicum supervision and were divided into two categories: maximizing effectiveness of the practicum experience and specific techniques in practicum supervision. Overall, practicum supervision was found to be a worthwhile and beneficial experience and a necessary part of counselor education programs. Focusing on the personality characteristics or value systems of supervisors or supervisees, however, produced mixed results in predicting training effectiveness. There was greater consistency in the examination of specific techniques in supervision with positive outcomes resulting from the utilization of microtraining, dual supervision, peer supervision, modeling, and IPR. Professional burnout and factors related to the burnout phenomenon are issues that frequently appear in the current literature. Empirical studies to establish the relationships between perceived burnout and pertinent personal or organizational characteristics are difficult to find, however. This exploratory study sought to investigate relationships between counselors' felt degree of burnout and their perceptions of school leadership style, themselves, their job, and their clients. It was found that leadership style in the school was related to counselor's perceptions of themselves and their jobs, but not to their views of their clients or their own potency. Further, it was found that self‐reported burnout was strongly related to counselors' perceptions and that self, job, and clients were all perceived more negatively as burnout increase

This article describes results of a national survey of rehabilitation educators concerning their perceptions of their knowledge adequacies and training needs. Twelve vital instructional areas were identified and respondents were asked to rate each area for their adequacy of knowledge, need for inservice training, and willingness to attend inservice training. Findings showed that educators rated their knowledge adequacy high and their need for inservice training low. Although there was a significant inverse relationship between knowledge adequacy and need for inservice training, there was no significant relationship between willingness to attend inservice training and knowledge adequacy, or between willingness to attend inservice training and need for inservice training.
