The metaphorical use of body imagery in relation to landscape is fundamental in the Western world. The Renaissance metaphor that understood the earth to be modelled on the human body has generally been regarded as a one‐way relation, ‘landscape as body. It finds its expression in generic landscape naming. In imaginative literature at least, the reverse relation, ‘body as landscape,’ is of frequent occurrence and continues well into the machine age. The body in question is generally female, and the culmination of the ‘body as landscape' metaphor is pornotopia.L'utilisation de la métaphore reliant I'image du corps à celle du paysage est fondamentale dans notre culture occidental.

Of the many written communications that are explored today by geographers, especially by those who work within a humanist perspective, the letters to the editor appear to be a useful tool for identifying spatial meanings. The appraisal of these meanings can be achieved through different techniques of content analysis. I will illustrate how a method of content analysis that focuses on the basic components of the discourse and on the interrelated structures of these components can reveal not only images of the environment, but also the ways in which spatial expe

This paper analyses the export performance and export potentials of end products manufactured in western Canada. Exports are explicitly interpreted as part of the (progressive) internationalization of firms. A sample of manufacturing firms is classified according to a five‐stage model of the internationalization of firms on the basis of variations in marketing and technological strategy. It is suggested that improvements in export performance would be facilitated by export stimulation programs that are sensitive to the varying resources and to constraints of firms in different stages of internationalization. More generally, export promotion should be seen as part of the problem of stimulating the growth of firms.

In the preface toTowns in the Making, Gerald Burke says that ‘a keener interest in town‐making in history sometimes emerges after graduation' (Burke 1971, v). Having had this happen, and wishing it had happened earlier, I have made an attempt here to outline some of the reasons why I felt it important to develop a course entitled ‘The Evolution of Urban Form' ‐ and to discuss some of the themes around which a course in urban morphogenesis can be de
