This article aims at outlining the possibilist position of Harold Innis, at exploring its foundations, and at showing its bearing on his written work. It is shown that the basic orientations of his possibilism converge with those of the Vidalians. In this respect, its neo‐Kantian supports are underlined. Its significance in his thought is made apparent in three themes: the problem of, and approach to, the territorial formation of Canada, the importance given to technology, and the leeway given

Agrégation played a key role in the operation of the Université de France of the nineteenth century but is poorly understood in the English‐speaking world. Characteristics of the French Université are outlined, and the agrégation competition of 1866 in which Vidal de la Blache participated is described in detail, as further illustration of the early training and intellectual orientation of the future founder of the French school of human geography. Characteristics of the successful candidates in the agrégation examinations are then examined, and possible reasons for the perennial shortage of agrégés teaching in the Université are suggested.

Four sources for the elaboration of a redefinition of culture and for the outlining of a revised method for cultural geography are examined: superorganicist and related ideas (White), symbolic and interactionist ideas (Geertz), institutional and interactionist views (Wagner), and symbolic interactionism and human ecology (Ericksen). These four are discussed within the broader context of human and land relations and of the evolution of cultural geography, especially the schools of Vidal and Sauer. Cultural geography emerged asa secondaryinterest within geography, despite compelling nineteenth‐century input, but is now taking cognizance of an array of social science concepts. A focus on theory, on institutions and other groups, on communication, and on symboling helps both spatial and non‐spatial behaviour to be understood as a consequence of group allegiance. The resulting cultural landscape can be interpreted both functionally and symbolically.

Intellectuals tend toward a negative view of the modern city, whereas literary works express more ambivalent feelings. The novelist Malcolm Lowry's vision of the North American city, however, is purely topophobic, and six levels of topophobia are evident. In ascending order of disquietude, cities are regarded as placeless, as sources of sensory overload, as fundamentally inorganic (the aesthetico‐sensory dimension) and as symbols of evil, as predators, and ultimately as the agents of civilization, the creator of deathscapes (the symbolic dimension).Les intellectuels ont tendance à avoir une vision négative de la ville dans le monde moderne, tandis que les oeuvres littéraires démontrent des sentiments plus ambivalents.
