摘要:
The state-of-the-art technology on the carbon fibre reinforced aluminium matrix composites is reviewed. The available raw material, various fabrication techniques along with their effects on the properties of the composites produced and the manufacturing problems encountered are described in detail. General trends are outlined and further research and development work on composites containing pitch base carbon fibres in a matrix of high strength aluminium alloy is recommended.

摘要:
Intermetallic compounds have been recognized as potentially useful structural materials. They form the basis for high temperature materials of the future. Intermetallic compounds based on aluminum have attractive characteristics of high strength at elevated temperatures, good corrosion and oxidation resistance, and low densities. This research focuses on the use of the nickel aluminide (Ni3Al) intermetallic compound as a matrix for high temperature composites. The powder processing approach has been adopted for the consolidation of these composites. This paper describes research on powder injection molding (PIM) of an alumina fiber reinforced nickel aluminide intermetallic. Major problems are associated with the debinding process. They have been resolved and composite structures formed. Preliminary investigations on a reactive hot isostatic pressing approach for forming these nickel aluminide matrix composites, are briefly discussed.

摘要:
A gas pressure liquid metal infiltration technique for producing fiber reinforced Ni3Al/Al2O3and Ni3Al/Al2O3composites has been described. Composite bars of 9.5 mm diameter, 150 mm long were produced. It was found necessary to add 0.5 at.%Ti to both Ni3Al and NiAl alloys to obtain adequate wetting. There was a strong tendency for liquid metal infiltration along one side of the fibers causing a shift of the fibers to the opposite side. No interface reaction zone was observed at optical magnifications up to 1000X. A composite of Ni3Al containing 33 volume percent of FP fibers fractured at 890 MPa which is approximately 3 times the yield strength of the matrix IC-50(21.73A1-0.34Zr-0.IB-Balance Ni at.%) + 0.5 at. %Ti.

摘要:
Rapidly solidified ribbons of a variety of niobium-based alloys have been produced by electron beam melting and splat quenching (EBSQ) onto a rotating copper disc. Microstructural analysis of the beneficial effects of rapid solidification can be performed on the as-solidified and heat treated ribbons. Ribbons can be reduced to particulates and consolidated into a fully dense billet using conventional powder metallurgical techniques such as hot isostatic pressing (HIP).

摘要:
Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is an established process used to deposit thin films of advanced materials, based on chemical reactions. Three recent developments in CVD materials processing are described. Low pressure CVD is used extensively in the semiconductor, microelectronics, and optoelectronics industries for depositing stabilized oxides to protect graphite composites, and hard coatings of titanium compounds for cutting tools. Metallorganic CVD is the primary process for depositing the III-V group elements for advanced epitaxial semiconductor designs. Plasma-enhanced CVD is based on the ionization of chemical species and is growing rapidly in importance in areas such as the deposition of diamond films in a microwave plasma.

摘要:
The principles of applying electrical discharge in die-sinking and wire-cutting machines are reviewed. This technique causes material to be eroded by switching electrical current on and off between the tool and the work-piece through a dielectric fluid. For the case of metals and many ceramics and ceramic composites, the mechanism for this erosion is melting or perhaps evaporation/condensation. For refractory materials, a new mechanism for erosion, thermal spalling, was observed. The role of the dielectric fluid, its purity, and the proper nitration system are discussed. The effect of various operating conditions, including the current, pulse time duration, and wire feed rate, on the material removal rate and the surface quality is also reviewed. It was seen that EDM can be applied to machining advanced materials, including single phases and composites of ceramic/ceramic and ceramic/metal, if a minimum electrical conductivity is met.
