摘要:
This paper provides a theoretical perspective for dealing with the initial entry stage of interpersonal interaction. The seven axioms and 21 theorems presented suggest a set of research priorities for studying the development of interpersonal relationships. The paper concludes with a discussion of some of the problems to be considered if the theory is to be extended beyond the initial stages of interaction.

摘要:
Eighteen dyads (10 female and eight male), each composed so as to have one member who scored high and one who scored low on a test of personality dominance, were given a cooperative problem‐solving discussion task lasting fifteen minutes. The persons with the more dominant personalities held the floor more and attempted more interruptions in proportion to their partners’ total amounts of speaking time than did those with less dominant personalities. There was also evidence that the high dominant subjects were more successful in completing their interruption attempts, although this result fell somewhat short of statistical significance. Despite the fact that the trend of the results appeared to be consistently stronger among males, there were no significant sex differences. Implications of the findings for the interpersonal communication theory of Watzlawick, Beavin, and Jackson (1967) are discus

摘要:
This study investigated the effects of observer expectations about a speaker's nonfluency level on nonfluency counts made during a taped speech and on post‐performance evaluations of nonfluency, anxiety, central idea, organization, language, delivery, and general effectiveness. The influence of task ambiguity and medium of presentation on expectancy effects was also explored. Results indicate: (a) in a high‐ambiguity condition, observers who expected a fluent speaker counted fewer nonfluencies in his speech than observers who expected a nonfluent speaker; (b) fluent‐expectation observers rated the speaker more positively on the seven evaluative measures; (c) low task ambiguity eliminated expectancy effects on nonfluency counts and ratings of organization but not on the other six evaluative measures; and (d) auditory and auditory‐visual presentations of the speech did not produce significant diff

摘要:
This study examined the effects of conflicting information in two messages about the same topic on recall of, and post favorability toward the message. Three multiple regression analyses tested the relationship among conflicting information, initial attitude, attitude change, salience, message clarity, and adequacy of support in predicting recall and post favorability. Six hypotheses were supported. Both recall and post favorability were inhibited when conflicting information was present. Attitudes and message variables were significant predictors of learning and post favorability. Proactive inhibition produced more interference than retroactive inhibition. Results are discussed in terms of the interrelatedness of the learning and persuasion processes and the ability of interference theory to predict outcomes in both paradigms.

摘要:
Though rhetorical theories clearly prescribe the function of evidence in forming individual beliefs, communication research aimed at testing the empirical validity of such prescriptions has been inconclusive. Because of questions surrounding the conceptual and operational adequacy of previous research in this area, this inquiry sought to: first, critically examine the existing theory and research surrounding the evidence‐attitude change relationship; second, reformulate existing theory based on the critique; third, test the empirical validity of the theoretical reformulation; and finally, discuss the implications of this research to theory and subsequent researc

摘要:
A natural social disruption produced by the attempted assassination of George Wallace provided an opportunity to conduct a field study concerned with the mediating effects of self‐esteem, birth‐order, sex, and social situation on the relationship between anxiety and interpersonal communication among a sample of high school students. Contrary to expectations based on previous research, the significant relationship between anxiety and affiliation, while affected by social situation, was not generally influenced or mediated by the other variables. Possible explanations for these findings are explored, and an overall causal model is suggested to account for the findi

摘要:
Interaction matrices showing two act sequences from studies of discussion groups, teacher classroom behavior, speech therapy sessions, and policecivilian telephone calls were analyzed using the information theory statistic to obtain estimates of distributional and sequential predictability. Data from 10 studies were analyzed, and the results showed the relative sequential structure ranging from 3.8 to 29.8 percent. Predictability due to distribution of acts ranged from 3.4 to 41.9 percent. Flow chart diagrams were developed showing the sequence generating processes for discussion groups and classroom interaction. The effects of category system design, interactant roles, task logic, and the number of actors on both sequential and distributional predictability are discussed.

摘要:
This paper reports the findings of a recent survey to determine the effectiveness of efforts by the Library of Congress to communicate with its employees about the Library's Affirmative Action program. Results indicated relatively low levels of employee information about the program. While the perceived credibility of the source was positively correlated with the amount of information absorbed, perceived self‐interest in the Affirmative Action program was no
