This article introduces and discusses a new measure of the relative economic affluence (REA) between income distributions with different means. The REA measureDis applied to the U.S. white and black household income distributions of 1967 and 1979. The measureDshows that the REA of the white households with respect to the black households decreased from 1967 to 1979. This conclusion contrasts with those obtained by applications of distance or quasi-distance functions. It is shown in this study that REA measures and distance functions address different and relevant issues. An REA measure deals with the relation “more affluent than” and defines a partial strict ordering over the set of pairs of income distributions—that is, the relation is asymmetric and transitive—whereas a distance function accounts for the dissimilarity between distributions without imposing an ordering relation and hence fulfills the symmetry property.

Incomplete moments are used to characterize income inequality and provide the basis for interdistributional Lorenz curves. Four measures of interdistributional inequality are considered and seen to be related to an interdistributional welfare interpretation. Based upon these measures, there has been a significant secular decline in interdistributional inequality between blacks and whites over the past 30 years.

This article uses a comprehensive model of economic inequality to examine the impact of relative price changes on inequality in the marginal distributions of various income components in which the marginal distributions are derived from a multidimensional joint distribution. The multidimensional joint distribution function is assumed to be a member of the Pearson Type VI family; that is, it is assumed to be a beta distribution of the second kind. The multidimensional joint distribution is so called because it is a joint distribution of components of income and expenditures on various commodity groups. Gini measures of inequality are devised from the marginal distributions of the various income components. The inequality measures are shown to depend on the parameters of the multidimensional joint distribution. It is then shown that the parameters of the multidimensional joint distribution depend on the relative prices of various commodity groups and several other specified exogenous variables. Thus, knowledge of how changes in relative prices affect the parameters of the multidimensional joint distribution is deductively equivalent to knowledge of how changes in relative prices affect inequality in the marginal distributions of various components of income. It is found that relative price changes have a statistically significant impact on inequality in various components of income.

The main objective of this article is to specify and estimate a model for the car accident rates in Spain to improve input for the decision-making process for insurance companies and provide useful information for traffic authorities. The prediction performance of the model is also analyzed in an attempt to verify the improvement in prediction that takes place when more elaborate models are used.

Three empirical issues in the use of cost-of-living indexes are examined: (a) substitution bias, (b) differences across demographic groups, and (c) the importance of the reference indifference curve for true indexes when preferences are nonhomothetic. Using the estimated parameters of a demand system for food commodities from two microdata cross-sections, both true (parametric) and Laspeyres price indexes for food are compared across both demographic groups and cross-sectional “cohorts.”

In this article we examine the size relation of several deadweight loss measures and derive variance calculations for a numerical methods estimator of deadweight loss. Two examples are given to demonstrate the importance of these results.

A flexible procedure is proposed whereby both the random and systematic errors in measurement of survey data on inflation expectations can be appropriately handled when these surveys are used in the estimation of macroeconomic models. During the period 1952–1980, Livingston's two expectations series and the SRC series systematically underestimated inflation expectations by nearly 25%. The ASA–NBER survey, however, does not exhibit such underestimation. Thus, the use of the Livingston or SRC data as an unbiased measure of the true expectations of inflation would result in overestimation of the Fisher effect and the ex ante real interest rate.

A multiplicative seasonal forecasting model for cumulative events in which, conditional on end- of-season totals being given and seasonal shape being known, it is shown that events occurring within the season are multinomially distributed is presented. The model uses the information contained in the arrival of new events to obtain a posterior distribution for end-of-season totals. Bayesian forecasts are obtained recursively in two stages: first, by predicting the expected number and variance of event counts in future intervals within the remaining season, and then by predicting revised means and variances for end-of-season totals based on the most recent forecast error.
