SummaryThe drought‐deciduous woodlands in Kitui, Kenya are dominated byCommiphora africanaandAcaciaspp. includingAcacia senegal, A. tortilisandA. mellifera. The 1990 density was 329 trees, 3571 shrubs and 1442 seedlings per hectare ofAcaciaspecies. Trees ofCommiphora africanahave survived because the tree is useless for firewood or timber. Only a few trees ofAcaciaspecies, which are useful for fuel, remained, because people cut the trees selectively. The dominant species in the shrub layer wereHermannia oliveri, Aspila mossambicensisandSolanum incanum, Chloris roxburghianaandSporobolus fimbriatusbecame re‐established on the bare ground after one year's exclusion from livestock grazing. The average diameter increment of the trees was 0·5 cm per year with a standard deviation of 0·3 cm. SummaryCassidinae in forest floor vegetation were studied in five different forest habitats in Kibale Forest, Western Uganda, by monthly sweep net sampling during 23 months from July 1983 to May 1985 and in September 1986. The studied habitats were two virgin forest sites, two selectively logged sites and one exotic pine plantation. Altogether 22 Cassidinae species were found. The peak numbers of Cassidinae per sample were found in the early dry season after the long rains. The most common species in all sites wasCassida humerosa. There does not seem to be any Cassidinae species which are specialized for life in virgin forest. Several species occurring in the managed forest sites were not found in virgin forest. In logged forest sites and in the exotic pine plantation higher species numbers were caught than in virgin forest sites. The species composition of pine plantation differed significantly from those in all other sites. In a species‐wise factor analysis, the two logged sites were close to each other and to the pine plantation.RésuméDans cinq habitats différents de la forêt de Kibale, dans l'ouest ougandais, on a étudié les Cassidinae du sol forestier au moyen d'un filet, de juillet 1983 à mai 1985 et en septembre 1986. Les endroits étudiés étaient deux sites de forêt vierge, deux sites exploités pour le bois et une plantation de conifères exotiques. En tout, on a trouvé 22 espèces de Cassidinae. Les nombres maximaux de Cassidinae par échantillon ont été relevés en début de saison sèche après la grande saison des pluies. Partout, l'espèce la plus commune estCassida humerosa. II ne semble pas exister d'espèce de Cassidinae qui soit spécialisée pour la vie en forêt vierge. Certaines espèces récoltées en forêt exploitée ne se retrouvent pas en forêt vierge. Dans les forêts exploitées et dans les plantations de conifères exotiques, on attrapait un plus grand nombre d'espèces qu'en forêt vierge. SummaryLitter was collected from 18‐year‐oldTectona grandis(teak) and 13‐year‐oldTerminalia superba(afara) planted at various square spacings at Gambari Forest Reserve, Southwestern Nigeria. Litter was collected throughout the year in both species with the rate of fall being particularly high in the dry season in the case of teak and in the wet season in the case of afara. The peak of litter fall in teak may be related to the degree of desiccation or water stress and that of afara to diurnal temperature range and rainfall. The mean annual litter production (kg/ha) inTectona grandisamounted to 5067, 4688, 4998 and 5196 in square spacings (m2) of 1·37, 1·98, 2·9 and 3·96, respectively. The mean annual litter production (kg/ha) inTerminalia superbaamounted to 4157, 3873, 3108 and 4032, in square spacings (m2) of 1·8, 2·8, 4·2 and 6·1, respectively. SummaryEstimates of aboveground standing crop were carried out over a seven‐month period in the Nairobi National Park, Kenya. Standing crop varied according to the rainfall period, more during the growing season (March to June) than during the dry season months (January, February and July).Themeda triandracontributed most of the standing crop, followed byPennisetum mezianum. Dicots, which ranked third, were found to be important plant constituents in this grassland. Percentage crude protein and rumen dry matter digestibility varied from month to month and between different plant categories. Both were highest during the growing season. Dicots maintained higher percentage crude protein and rumen dry matter digestibility than grasses. In most months percentage crude protein was below the critical level required for maintenance of the grazing animals. Standing stocks of crude protein for the whole sward were highest during the growing season months and lowest during the dry season months.RésuméDes estimations de la masse végétale aérienne ont été menées durant une période de sept mois au Parc National de Nairobi, Kenya. SummarySixteen territories of the black‐headed village weaver and twenty of the chestnut‐and‐black weaver were quantitatively assessed for areas and shapes at three colonies on the University of Ife campus, Nigeria. The shapes of the territories were classified as elipsoid (E‐type), triangular (T‐type) and quadrilateral (Q‐type) from observations of the activities of the males. The territorial areas of the black‐headed were larger than those of the chestnut‐and‐black weaver in sparse and dense colonies. The mean distance between the nests also varied, being greater in the former than in the latter colonies. The number of nests per territory, however, was higher in the black‐headed than in the chestnut‐and‐black weaver. The rainfallZeitgeberincreased territorial aggressiveness and in one male chestnut‐and‐black weaver resulted in expansion of its territorial area. Site tenacity in the males was considered to be of a temporary nature, lasting about three breeding seasons.RésuméSeize territoires de tisserin gendarme et vingt de tisserins noir de Vieillot furent évalués sur base de leur forme et de leur surface, dans trois colonies du campus de l'Université de Ife, Nigeria. SummaryThe variations in the breeding seasons of the black‐headed village weaver and the chestnut‐and‐black weaver were analysed in fifteen of the 30 colonies sighted at Ife and one colony on Ilesha Road, about 14 km to the east. Both species commenced large‐scale breeding during the first peak in rainfall and established numerous unproductive satellite colonies. The changes in gonad weights indicated bimodal and discontinuous off‐season breeding in the black‐headed village weaver but breeding in the chestnut‐and‐black weaver was mainly unimodal, with two peaks observed in only one colony. The mean nest completion time and commencement of a new nest was 11 h (range = 9–15 h) and 6 days (range = 3–13 days), respectively whereas in the chestnut‐and‐black weaver the corresponding figures were 9 h (range = 6–11 h) and 3 days (range = 2–4 days). Mate attraction displays in both species were restricted during early stages of nest construction but were heightened on completion, when females were responsive. The mean bout lengths of undernest and branch displays in the chestnut‐and‐black weaver were significantly (P<0.05) longer than in the black‐headed village weaver. The pair bond formation and motivation of males to build a new nest were investigated.RésuméOn analyse les variations des saisons de reproduction du tisserin gendarme et du tisserin noir de Vieillot dans 15 des 30 colonies connues à Ife et une colonie sur Ilesha Road, à environ 15 kilomètres vers l'est. Les deux espèces ont commencéà se reproduire en grand nombre lors du premier pic de la saison des pluies et ont établi de nombreuses colonies satellites improductives. Les changements du poids des gonades indiquaient une reproduction hors‐saison bimodale et discontinue chez le tisserin gendarme mais la reproduction du tisserin noir de Vieillot était surtout unimodale, avec deux pics de reproduction dans une colonie seulement. Le temps moyen pour terminer un nid et en commencer un autre était de 11 h. (de 9 à 15 h.) et 6 jours (de 3 à 13 jours) pour le premier alors que pour le tisserin noir de Vieillot les chiffres correspondants étaient de 9 h. (de 6 à 11 h.) et 3 jours (de 2 à 4 jours). Les manifestations pour l'accouplement étaient limitées au début de la construction du nid mais devenaient plus vives lorsque celui‐ci se terminait et que les femelles devenaient plus réceptives. La durée moyenne des manifestations sous le nid et sur les branches était significativement plus longue chez le tisserin noir de Vieillot (P<0,05) que chez le tisserin gendarme. SummaryThe thermotolerance characteristics of seeds from the tropical tree species,Combretum apiculatumSonder collected from four sites (two low altitude and two higher altitude) in Zimbabwe were studied. It was found that all seeds germinated well when incubated for 5 days under moderate temperatures (25–33°C), whereas only the seeds collected from the lower altitude warmer or rainier sites were germinable at higher temperatures (3641°C). The ability of the seeds to acquire thermotolerance through short‐term post‐imbibition heat treatments prior to the 5‐day incubation to assess germination was also investigated. Seeds that had been imbibed for 16 hours at 30°C and then given a heat treatment of 40°C for 2 hours (or 40°C for 2 hours followed by 30°C for 1 hour) prior to a 50°C heat stress for 2 hours generally showed increased germination, growth and viability (assessed by the ability to reduce the dye 2, 3, 5‐triphenyltetrazolium chloride) when compared with seeds that had been incubated at 50°C alone. All seed populations showed the ability to acquire thermotolerance by all or some of the above methods of measurement, but recovery from heat shock as assessed by germination and growth was higher with the lower altitude populations (which also exhibited a greater ability to withstand the 50°C heat stress). It is proposed that acquisition of thermotolerance may be of survival advantage toC. apiculatumseeds in the lower altitude areas of this range, particularly when the early rains are erratic and the seeds likely to be subjected to periods of post‐imbibitional heat stress.RésuméOn a étudié les caractéristiques de thermotolérance des semences de l'arbre tropicalCombretum apiculatumSonder récoltées à quatre endroits du Zimbabwe, deux de basse altitude et deux de plus haute altitude. On a trouvé que toutes les semences germaient bien après cinq jours d'incubation à des températures modérées (25 à 33°C) tandis que seules les graines provenant des endroits plus chauds et pluvieux de plus basse altitude germaient à des températures plus élevées (36 à 41°C). On a aussi étudié la capacité qu'ont les semences d'acquérir une thermotolérance après de brefs traitements à la chaleur précédant l'incubation de cinq jours, pour en évaluer la germination. Les graines qui avaient été placées 16h à 30°C puis soumises pendant 2h à 40°C (ou bien 2h à 40°C suivies d'lh à 30°C) avant un traitement de 2h à 50°C montrent une germination, une croissance et une viabilité accrues (évaluées par la capacitéà réduire la teinture de chlorure 2, 3, 5‐triphényltétrazolé) par rapport aux semences qui ont uniquement incubéà 50°C. Toutes les graines montrent une capacitéà acquérir une thermotolérance par une ou certaines des méthodes de mesure décrites ci‐dessus, mais la récupération du shock thermique était évaluée d'après la germination, et la croissance était supérieure chez les populations de plus basse altitude (qui montrent aussi une meilleure tolérance à une température de 50°C). SummaryThe foetal membranes and placenta of the East African springhare from the embryonic disc stage to mature stage are described. Implantation is superficial and central. A massive preplacenta is evident before the chorioallantoic placenta is formed. The parietal trophoblast persists throughout pregnancy. No inversion of the yolk sac (or germ layers) occurs in the East African springhare. The placental barrier is essentially endotheliochorial, consisting of maternal capillary endothelium with a prominent acidophilic PAS positive lamina and a layer of syncytial trophoblast. This study also demonstrates a close similarity of the springhare to the rest of the rodents in foetal membranes and placental structures. On the basis of foetal membranes and placenta development the East African springhare is more closely related to the scuiromorphs than to the other suborders. The springhare should be placed in its own superfamily of Pedetoidea in the suborder scuiromorpha.RésuméOn décrit les membranes foetales et le placenta du lièvre sauteur est‐africain, du stade de disque embryonnaire jusqu'à la maturité.
