SummaryA comparison ofEchinometra mathaeidensities and sizes was undertaken on an inner reef lagoon and an outer reef edge on a densely populated tourist beach at Diani, Kenya.Echinometra mathaeidensities and average lengths were significantly higher (t‐test,P<0.001) in the inner reef lagoon (density = 14.2±1.7 no. m‐2,n= 90; lengths = 40.8 ±0.6 mm,n= 144) than on the outer reef edge (density = 1.7 ± 0.13 no. m‐2,n= 60; lengths = 31.2 ± 0.8 mm,n= 68). A comparison with density and length data collected 15 years previously (Khamala, 1971), showed increases in the numbers and average lengths (t‐test;P<0.05) in the inner reef and a decrease in the average lengths (t‐test;P<0.05) on the outer reef edge. Using a correlation of the length and average weight of individual urchins (weight = 0.0021 length2.64,r= 0.96,n= 144) and the average length and density measurements (no. m‐2), an increase of 424 g m‐2on the inner reef and a decrease of 81 g m‐2on the outer reef edge was found over the past 15 years. Quantities of sediment found in the gut contents of the sea urchins (69.5% by weight) were positively correlated with the weight of the sea urchins (F=67.5,P<0.001,r= 0.73), which suggests that reef substrate degradation rates are proportional to the urchin biomass. Therefore, we suggest that there has been an increase in reef substrate degradation rates on the inner reef lagoon but not on the outer reef edge. The distribution ofE. mathaeion the inner reef was positively correlated (F= 82.2,P<0.001,r= 0.69) with the percentage of hard substrate (dead coral and coral rubble) but not on the outer reef, where the availability of shelter appears to be of greater importance. We suggest that the population increase in the inner reef is due to ecological release ofE. mathaeifrom competitors and predators due to increased fishing and shelling activities.

SummaryPopulation estimates and distributions of the African elephant (Loxodonta africana) in the entire Kenya rangelands was obtained using light aircraft during the period 1977–1981. The population of elephants for the whole of Kenya was 75,300 ± 5000 in 1977, 55,300 ± 5000 in 1978 and 51,200 ± 5000 in 1980–1981. The ratio of live to dead elephants decreased from 4‐0: 1 in 1977 to 2‐0:1 in 1978 and 1.27: 1 in 1980–1981; an indication of rapid rise in elephant mortality. All except 7500 ± 2500 of these elephants were on the rangelands (500,000 km2), especially in the Hola, Ijara, Tsavo, Mtito Andei, Jipe and Lamu eco‐units. Their numbers were also relatively high in Meru, Laikipia and Mara eco‐units. The 7500 ± 2500 elephants occurring outside the rangelands were mainly found in the Aberdare and the Mt Kenya National Parks, Mt Elgon and the Mau Forest. Although the rapid downward trend in elephant numbers slowed down between 1978 and 1980–1981, there is still an urgent need for stringent conservation measures to be instituted.RÉSUMEÉDes estimations de population et les distributions de l'éléphant africain (Loxodonta africana) sur l'entièreté du territoire du Kenya furent obtenues par l'utilisation d'un avion léger durant la période 1977–1981.

SummaryIn 1984 two elephant censuses were conducted in the northern part of the Serengeti National Park and the Masai Mara Game Reserve. A count in April, in the wet season, showed 853 elephants in the Mara and 367 in the northern‐most section of the Serengeti, including the Lamai wedge. Their distribution was even throughout the Mara Game Reserve, but in the Serengeti they were heavily clumped around the Kogatende guardpost. In October, during the dry season, a second count was made with 773 elephants counted in the Mara and 756 elephants in an enlarged census zone in the northern Serengeti. This second count found the elephants more widely dispersed along permanent water courses. Results of these counts were then compared to long term census data spanning the period 1958 to 1977. These results showed that elephant numbers increased until 1965 and then remained stable, for well over a decade, at about 2000 within the Serengeti National Park, and under 500 in the Mara. The 1984 results, however, show that while elephant numbers in the Mara were slightly above the long term averages, a significant drop had occurred in the northern Serengeti. Dead elephants were counted in October and corrected for undercount bias. Carcass ratios (the ratio of dead to dead plus live) were calculated. The Mara showed a 5% carcass ratio, indicating a low level of mortality and/or immigration of elephants. The northern Serengeti had a carcass ratio of 38%, comparable to other areas in Africa where major outbreaks of elephant poaching have occurred. Groups of dead elephants in northern Serengeti were observed suggesting organized poaching, and this was confirmed by park staff. The focus of poaching also appears to have changed within the ecosystem. In 1977 carcass ratios were 13% in the northern Serengeti and 32% in the Mara. It is suggested that poaching was formerly more intense on the Kenya side of the border. By 1984 the situation appears to have reversed and elephants from northern Serengeti were probably seeking refuge in the Mara game reserve thus increasing the difference in carcass ratios on either side of the border.RÉSUMEÉDeux recensements d'éléphants furent conduits en 1984 dans la partie nord du Pare National du Serengeti et la Réserve du Masai Mara.

SummaryFactors affecting the use of flight‐hunting areas by three common raptors (rock kestrelFalco tinnunculusL., jackal buzzardButeo rufofuscus(Forster), and black‐shouldered kiteElanus caeruleus(Desfontaines)) were analysed in a montane grassland area. Seasonal variation in foraging site selection was examined, based on five habitat parameters: regrowth time since burn, cover density, grass height, rockiness and slope. Kestrels and buzzards moved into recently burnt areas to hover, while kites hovered over undisturbed grassland. Increased small mammal and large insect availability characterized newly burnt savanna and are suggested as reasons behind the habitat change by two of the three raptors. An increase in the use of rocky grassland by kestrels and buzzards coincided with the availability of juvenile skinks in this patchily‐distributed habitat.RÉSUMEÉLes facteurs influencant l'utilisation de terrain de chasse par trois rapaces communs (Crécerelle des rochers,Falco tinnunculusL., Buse‐chacal,Buteo rufofuscus(Forster) et Milan àépaules noires,Elanus caeruleus(Desfontaines)) ont été analysés dans une zone de prairie montagneuse.
