AbstractCase research is presented as an alternative method of farm management research. Results from traditional farm management research are discussed, and then case research is defined and case research methods are outlined. Strengths and limitations of the two research methods are compared. Recommendations based upon results from four case studies of excellent Ontario hog farms are presented as an example of case research.

AbstractCurrent human resources management policies on Ontario swine farms were evaluated in terms of attracting, keeping, and motivating labor. A survey of swine farm employers and employees indicated that swine farm employees had lower wages, fewer benefits, and worked longer hours than their nonagricultural counterparts. Female employees were paid less than male employees even though there was no difference in other employment or educational characteristics. Employers indicated difficulty attracting employees, but their employee turnover rate was lower than in nonagricultural industries. No relationships were found between employer/farm characteristics and motivation proxies.

AbstractAquacultural producers were surveyed to ascertain the tax accounting methods utilized for federal income tax reporting purposes. Approximately 99% of the producers surveyed use the cash method of reporting and also deduct currently the cost of fingerlings purchased for ultimate resale. Because cash‐method farmers generally must capitalize the cost of purchased inventory until the period of sale, aquacultural producers may not be in compliance with current tax rules. Further, producers have classified aquacultural pond construction costs as (a) a soil and water conservation expense, (b) a single purpose agricultural structure, and (c) a land improvement although only the latter treatment appears safe from attack by the IRS. AbstractManagers of most agribusinesses surveyed believe they have adjusted effectively to New Zealand's sweeping economic reforms (Rogernomics). Firms well positioned to deal with Rogernomics and those gaining early mover advantages fared best. Strategic responses of the New Zealand agribusinesses generally contributed to profits, made them more competitive and were manageable. Labor market reforms represent unfinished business for New Zealand's government. The Reserve Bank also will be challenged to prevent further appreciation of the New Zealand dollar from stalling economic reforms and economic recovery. Businesses facing economic reforms elsewhere might profitably adopt strategies similar to those which produced positioning and early mover advantages in New Zealand.

AbstractThe southeastern states of Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and Florida currently export the majority of their feeder calves and import processed fed beef to satisfy consumer demand. The objective of this article is to determine the least‐cost routes of backgrounding, feeding/finishing, slaughtering/processing, and distributing boxed beef for these southeastern states. A spatiotemporal model is developed which determines the optimal routes for all production, processing, and distribution phases.
