AbstractCooperatives compete in farm‐supply and marketing industries with investor‐owned enterprises. Cooperatives' shares should depend on their distinctive organization: dealing “at cost” with members whose equities are tied to their current transactions with the cooperative. We show how this ownership structure affects cooperatives' activities and investment decisions, how it interacts with the public policies affording cooperatives special tax and antitrust status, and what these factors together imply for cooperatives' market shares and the extent of their vertical integration. AbstractThis study reports the result of a world‐wide survey showing favorable interest in a peanut futures contract (20 metric tons). A US exchange was preferred with possible delivery points in Savannah and Rotterdam. Hedging contracts were estimated to be 52,000 contracts annually with speculative contracts estimated to range from a low of 16,000 to as high as 303,000. This was judged to be the minimum volume for a successful contract and would be expected to increase significantly if the US price support program is abandoned. Thirty‐seven percent of peanuts handled in the market were under the control of five firms. AbstractUS exports of apples, poultry, and unmanufactured tobacco were analyzed using regression techniques to determine their responsiveness to foreign market development expenditures. It was determined that apple and tobacco exports were responsive, while poultry exports were not. Marginal returns to an additional dollar of export promotion for apples and tobacco were $60 and 31, respectively. Results indicated that response to poultry promotion was not different from zero. This is likely due to aggregation of data which does not permit isolating impacts of specific promotional efforts.

AbstractRecent regulatory and economic change encourages waste heat use in the northern United States. In this article, the value of that form of energy to growers of greenhouse crops is assessed. It is found that production of rooted floricultural crops is likely to be the dominant activity at facilities supplied with waste heat. Waste heat utilization is unlikely to cause interregional relocation of vegetable production in the US.

AbstractMultinational Corporations (MNCs) account for a large share of foreign direct investment in the developing nations. As multinational firms become more predominant in the local economy, host country policy makers and MNC managers are challenged to interact in an environment of often conflicting objectives. This paper identifies and discusses the policy issues that arise as multinational corporations invest in the developing nations. The policy issues are grouped into two general categories: macroeconomic policy issues and industry or firm specific policy issues.

AbstractThe cost and performance dimensions of the food retailing industry have undergone considerable change over the past two decades. Changing consumers, new technology, and intensified competition are among the factors shaping a new food retailing environment. As consumers exhibit greater preference for labor intensive service departments, for example, labor expenses, payroll as well as benefits have continued to grow as a percent of sales. It is chiefly this phenomenon that has been responsible for food chain operating costs increasing at a relatively greater rate than gross margins. The net performance result is that food chain profitability, however defined, has declined.
