ABSTRACT.A total of 54 myelograms were performed at the Royal Children's Hospital Brisbane over a three year period 1977 to 1979. These cases are reviewed. The relevant clinical features, the underlying pathology and the myelographic appearances are discussed. Myelography was of most value in the diagnosis and characterisation of intraspinal space occupying lesions. The presence of abnormal neurological signs was found to be significantly correlated with an abnormal myelogram.

ABSTRACT.Developmental screening of 304 infants was assessed by comparing Denver Developmental Screening Test (DDST) results with clinical assessment of developmental delay at 42 weeks of age. It was shown that DDST screening was effective, but largely unnecessary for the majority of infants with major delays as these infants had been identified in the perinatal period and were being followed up. DDST screening also yielded few false positive results but failed to detect many infants with minor delays.Developmental screening tests, including the DDST, applied as isolated examinations in infant populations are not recommended as many of the conditions being screened for are inadequately understood, their natural history unknown and the need for intervention and treatment unproven. However, all families with young children should be under regular health surveillance whereby the health, growth and development of infants and the way parents rear them is assessed and parents appropriately advised.

ABSTRACT.A report of the findings of a sample survey of alcohol consumption by Tasmanian High School pupils (age 12–16) in 1979.The sample of 646 boys and 565 girls was drawn from 14 Tasmanian High Schools and is considered to be representative of High School pupils in that State. The main findings are that(a) a marked increase in drinking particularly by boys occurs between age 14 and 15.(b) by age 11 the majority of boys and girls have had their first drink, and there is a tendency to more widespread early experimentation with alcoholic drinks over the period 1975–1979.(c) An association is observed between drinking behaviour and health outcomes of drinking as perceived by the

ABSTRACT.To determine aetiological factors a seven year review of massive pulmonary haemorrhage (MPH) was performed at the Mercy Maternity Hospital, Melbourne and compared with 26,208 consecutive live births. Statistically significant correlations were found between MPH and prematurity, birth asphyxia, hyaline membrane disease, breech delivery, multiple births, fetal growth retardation, Caesarean delivery, and the presence of a patent ductus arteriosus. MPH was associated with a mortality of 92.6%.Three severely growth retarded infants with unexpected MPH are presented. These cases indicate that severe intrauterine hypoxia is a major factor predisposing to MPH. Clinicians should be alert for the possibility of MPH in severely growth retarded infants and with vigilance and anticipation a more favourable outcome may be possible.

ABSTRACT.Eighty‐one parents of children with cystic fibrosis (CF) and 139 parents of children with leukemia were asked which of a range of health care providers had played the major role in nine areas of comprehensive paediatric care. Specialist paediatricians were reported to play the dominant role in the areas of diagnosis, ongoing medical treatment, genetic counselling and education concerning the illness and treatment. General practitioners were infrequently involved in the care of these children, other than for episodic and acute illness care. Parents in both disease categories and whose children were managed at different hospitals reported similar patterns of management responsibility and neglect.
