ABSTRACT.The problems of diagnosing and treating hyperactive children are described. Because there are no objective criteria for diagnosis and hyperactive children are difficult to differentiate from children with a variety of behavioural problems, it is suggested that the term currently has little meaning. The importance of a multidisciplinary approach to the problems of the children and their families is emphasized, together with intervention in the school as well as at home. Drug and diet treatments are deemed to be of little help in the long term, and alternatives to physical methods of treatment are suggested.

ABSTRACT.Thirty‐one children with asthma took part in a 10‐week period of training comprised of either swimming, a specially planned dry land exercise or a combination of both.There was no difference in the degree of bronchospasm induced by the different forms of exercise, nor was there a consistent change in the clinical pattern of asthma with either type of activity.No reduction in the bronchospastic response to exercise was noted after the 10 weeks of training but there was less tachycardia. ABSTRACT.Thirty‐six babies below 1500g birth weight with patent ductus arteriosus were treated orally with indomethacin, for symptomatic reasons on 30 occasions and prophylactically on 44. Closure was significantly more frequent before 12.5 days of age and when treatment was given with 48 hours of development of clinical signs. Independently of age at treatment it was five times more successful when given within 48 hours of signs developing than when given later. Babies below 1000g birth weight responded as well as those above. Responsiveness did not appear to depend on individual idiosyncrasy. The approach described was aimed to minimise the contribution of a patent ductus to the dangerous recurrent apnoea of the very low birth weight infant.The use of indomethacin in the patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) of prematurity has been widely reported1,2. The lesion has a close relationship both to the degree of immaturity and to the presence of hyaline membrane disease (HMD)3–5. Reports in the literature deal mainly with this combination. However, it is also common in babies of very low birth weight who do not have HMD.Pharmacological treatment has been emphasised as a first line in management6,7, and evidence suggests it is more likely to succeed when given earlier rather than later after birth8. The published indications for treatment remain broadly those of deteriorating symptoms for which ligation might have otherwise been recommended. ABSTRACT.A number of methods exist to measure neonatal blood pressure, one of which involves oscillometric principles. This method is the functional basis of the Dinamap 847 which has been studied for accuracy and reproductibility in 398 paired comparisons with direct arterial measurements in nine neonates. The correlation between the Dinamap and direct arterial pressure values were excellent, although for systolic blood pressure the Dinamap tends to underestimate by 2.4 ± 3.9 mm Hg. ABSTRACT.The growth and development of 24 twins at ages five and seven years were compared with a large group of Dunedin singletons. The physical growth and intelligence of the twins were found to remain disadvantaged at ages five and seven but language development and reading did not differ significantly from that of singletons.

ABSTRACT.Children with type 1 diabetes mellitus usually show partial recovery of pancreatic β cell function after initial stabilization. This partial remission may favourably influence the diabetic state. This study aimed to investigate factors that may influence β cell recovery. Studies were made on 26 newly diagnosed diabetic children.Residual β cell function was estimated by plasma immunoreactive C‐peptide (CPR) values in the fasting state and after meal stimulus. Some residual function was detected in all diabetics studied. C‐peptide secreted in response to a meal varied between 0.03–0.415 pmol/ml (0.182 ± 0.144 pmol/ml, mean ± SD).Statistical analysis of variables hypothesised to relate to β cell function showed significant positive correlations between ΔCPRmax. and age, admission pH, duration of preceding symptoms, and duration of treatment. Significant negative correlations were obtained between ΔCPRmax. and fasting glucose and insulin dosage at resuscitation. No significant correlations were observed between fasting CPR and the parameters mentioned. Multiple regression analysis reinforced the relationship between ΔCPRmax. and age at onset, fasting glucose and admission pH.
