A group of older children with galactosaemia, whose ability to metabolize galactose was reviewed, showed grossly impaired ability to deal with an isolated galactose load. Blood glucose levels were slightly lower in the children with galactosaemia, both in the fasting state and after galactose ingestion, than in their heterozygous relatives or in controls: this phenomenon does not appear to be the result of excessive insulin secretion in the galactosaemic patients. Surprisingly, glucosuria occurred in 7 out of 8 galactosaemics and one out of 13 carriers during a tolerance test. It has been shown by Strottet al.in 1969 that 17 α‐hydroxy progesterone (17‐OHP) was the main plasma steroid in patients with virilizing congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) due to a deficiency in 21 hydroxylase. Estimation of this steroid in the plasma of children however was not readily performed until the adaptation of the technique of competitive protein binding (CPB). Barnes and Atherden (1972) showed that by using such a CPB assay, the determination of serum 17‐OHP was of value in the diagnosis of CAH due to 21 hydroxylase deficiency. In children with cyanotic congenital heart disease (CCHD) response of platelets to adrenaline was found to be abnormal in 30 of 54 patients, disaggregation with ADP occurred in 16 of 40, and collagen aggregation was diminished in 6 of 21. That these defects represented a platelet release abnormality (PRA) was shown by normal uptake of14C Serotonin in 25 of 26 patients but abnormal release in 18 of 26. The PRA was significantly more frequent in patients aged more than 45 months; with PCV 59%; Hb 19; and platelet count 175,000/μl. There was no correlation between the bleeding time and the PRA, suggesting that in CCHD the bleeding time is not an adequate test of haemostasis. Specific measurements of prothrombin were used to measure liver‐dependent coagulation factors. A study evaluating the influence of gestational age and birth weight on the infant response to phototherapy for neonatal jaundice was attempted.Phototherapy was equally effective in small for dates infants and premature infants of comparable size, and also in the small for dates infants and normal full size infants of comparable gestational age. Gestational age and infant size do not seem to play a significant role in determining infant response to phototherapy.

Red cell superoxide dismutase activity was determined on cord blood samples. The normal range of activity in neonates, measured per gram of haemoglobin, was lower than that obtained for adults, with the mean value for neonates being approximately two‐thirds of the adult level. Mixed submaxillary/sublingual saliva from obligate heterozygotes for cystic fibrosis shows significantly elevated concentration of amylase at high or low salivation rates compared with normals. Sixty per cent of known carriers had values outside the range of apparently normal controls.

Sixty‐two infants and children were examined during the first 12 months in which computer assisted tomography was available at the Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, and our early local experience is presented.All ten tumours were correctly diagnosed. Eight nurses performed full examinations involving speech, posture, gait, dental inspection, physical examination including cardiac auscultation and developmental screening on 2,887 children at school entry. They referred 477 children to two medical officers who considered 186 needed further assessment. Results were compared with those of the previous year when the examinations were done solely by medical officers. Six out of 2,334 children whom 20 nurses examined by cardiac auscultation were confirmed as having organic heart disease. Their findings were compared with those of medical officers who examined the children independently. 32,870 children were examined by 40 nurses in the Service and 8,297 were referred to medical officers. Of this group, 2,730 children were found to have confirmed disabilities and handicaps.
