&NA;The purpose of this study was to describe the development of trunk flexor muscle strength of 3‐, 4‐, 5‐, and 6‐year‐old children and to describe related anthropometric characteristics. One physical therapist and three physical therapy students tested 108 children the first year; 32 children were retested 13 months after the initial test. A two‐way ANOVA was used to analyze differences between muscle grades for age and height and indicated that only age was significant. A two‐way ANOVA for repeated measures indicated that only age and session were significantly different. Post hoc analysis revealed significant differences between all age groups with the greatest gain in measured strength occurring between the ages of 4 and 5. Improvement in coordination may have a greater impact on the overt expression of trunk flexor strength than the child's actual ability to exert muscular force or the structural or biomechanical changes that occur with growth.

&NA;The purposes of this study were to identify an objective, reliable and clinically useful measure for assessing changes in trunk alignment and to evaluate which of five sitting positions was the most effective in encouraging trunk extension. Fifteen children ages two to six years with a diagnosis of a neuroiogicaiiy based motor impairment and weak trunk musculature were measured using the modified Schober Measurement for spinal extension in each of five randomly ordered positions. Significant differences were noted among the five positions. The ability to quantitatively identify those positions most likely to increase function and active control of the trunk is critical knowledge in the evaluation and management of children with motor disability.

&NA;Concurrent and construct validities of the Erhardt Developmental Prehension Assessment (EDPA) and the Peabody Developmental Fine Motor Scale (PDFMS) were examined by administering each test to 32 healthy full‐term infants under 12 months of age. Operationally defined age equivalent scores for the right and left hands on the EDPA were compared to the normed age equivalent scores on the PDFMS. Mean EDPA scores for both the right and left hands were significantly higher than the mean PDFMS score (p< .01). Correlations between scores on the two tests were .95 (EDPA right hand) and .94 (EDPA left hand). Correlations between chronological age and EDPA age equivalent scores were .95 for both the right and left hands. The correlation results provide evidence of construct validity of the EDPA as a measure of fine motor development, however, the differences in mean age equivalent scores for the two tests do not support concurrent validity of the EDPA with the PDFMS. Further standardization of EDPA administration and scoring procedures is recommended to improve reliability and validity.
