Procedures are described whereby phosphate and arsenate in seawater are brought to the surface in less than 5 min by an adsorption colloid flotation process which uses a positively charged iron(III) hydroxide collector, an anionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate, and nitrogen. Statistical studies on test series show a mean recovery of 90.7 % with a relative standard deviation of 3.1 % for phosphate at the 3.0 μg-at./l level, a mean recovery of 91.2% with a relative standard deviation of 1.5% for arsenate at the 3.0 μ-at./l level, and a mean recovery of 94.1% with a relative standard deviation of 0.8 % for the combined 0.30 μg-at. AsO43−−As/l and 2.25 μg-at. PO43−−P/1 samples.

摘要:
The volume of wet ES 28 and C 25 sulfonic ion exchange resin beads was determined by pycnometry for the H+, Na+, and K+foms in water, and the relative volume variations were determined by precisely measuring the variations of the bed height in columns when the resins were converted from one ionic form to another. A straightforward correlation was found for the ES 28 resin for which the packing factor β remains sufficiently constant with double-sieved, sufficiently homogeneously dispersed beads. The variations of β have to be taken into account for C 25.

The swelling of a sulfonic ion exchange resin (ES 28; 8 % divinylbenzene) was measured for hydrogen, alkaline, and alkaline-earth counterions in water, or in equilibrium with solutions of the corresponding chloride, and also for mixed forms. Compared with the (1M) isotherms, the monomonovalent biionic mixed forms show linear variations of swelling with composition and verify the Rice and Harris model. For monobivalent biionic forms, the equal swelling-equal affinity relationship is only verified at high solution concentrations.

The effects of high pressure (up to 3600 kg/cm2) on the distribution coefficients of simple and complex anions have been studied on a strongly basic anion exchange resin. The retention volumes of Br−, Cl−, and NO2−were found to increase with pressure, and this was attributed primarily to an increase in the compression of the eluent, leading to greater volumetric flows at constant linear flows. The retention volume of the Pb(II) nitrate species was found to decrease significantly with pressure. This was attributed to a breakup of the anionic and neutral lead complexes to unretained cationic species and NO3−. The breakup occurred because of the greater ability of the more numerous dissociation products to decrease the volume of the system by electrostriction.

Semicontinuous and continuous pumps were experimentally investigated at various operating conditions. The model system used was toluene-n-heptane on silica gel adsorbent. It has been shown that when the penetration distance for the cold cycle is less than or equal to that for the hot cycle and the height of the column, the pump has the capacity of complete removal of solute from one product stream. A quantity which is important in determining pump performance is the equilibrium parameter,b.Pump performance is enhanced by a large value ofb.

A broad theoretical and experimental investigation of retention in thermal field-flow fractionation is reported here. Equations connecting retention parameters with underlying thermal diffusion constants are reviewed, and new equations are developed to account for the distortion of the flow profile caused by a variable viscosity. Parameters investigated experimentally include channel width, solute molecular weight, channel temperature drop, cold-wall temperature, sample size, and solvent effects. All but the last two of these experimental studies showed good conformity with theoretical predictions. No theory exists for the prediction of sample-size or solvent effects. With regard to the latter, experimental results show that a variety of organic solvents are very effective, at roughly equal levels, in providing retention, while aqueous solvents are generally ineffective.

摘要:
Use of organic hydroxamic acids for detection and separation of metals by circular paper chromatography was successfully applied to various metals. Salicylhydroxamic acid in the presence of isopropyl and isobutyl alcohols was found to give the best results. No developer to process the chromatograms is necessary because the metal hydroxamic acid complexes separate as distinctly colored bands.

This investigation concerns the formation of adducts between bis(8-quinolinolo) zinc(II) and several nitrogen bases, and the effect of adduct formation on the distribution of zinc between two nonaqueous solvents, nitromethane and 1-decanol. Pyridine and 4-isopropylpyridine formed adducts with the zinc-8-quinolinol chelate in nitromethane. The addition of the nitrogen bases enhanced the distribution of zinc into nitromethane coincident with the adduct formation. The influence of the addition of nitrogen base on the distribution of zinc indicated that dibutyl amine forms a 1:1 adduct with the zinc-8-quinolinol chelate in 1-decanol.
