摘要:
A theory to describe transient and static equilibrium profiles in sedimentation and filtration is proposed. The dynamic aspects are based on Darcy's law and a continuity requirement in Lagrangian coordinates, recognizing that the Darcy flux describes flow of liquid relative to the particles in response to a space gradient of liquid potential. The equilibrium profiles may be calculated when the space gradient of liquid potential is zero. The theory is restricted to materials where the particle size distribution is such that no sorting of particles occurs.

摘要:
A phenomenological theory is derived for surface diffusion of noncondensible gases (also in the absence of capillary condensation) parallel with Knudsen flow. This theory does not require any specific model for adsorption and diffusion. The only assumption needed is the local equilibrium condition between gas phase and adsorbed phase along the flow axis. Numerous data both published in the literature and in the present paper can be explained by the theory.

摘要:
In this paper we discuss the expression for the total retention volume, treated as a pressure function, and the analytical methods for determination of the energy distribution function directly from gas-adsorption chromatagraphy data. It is shown that by assuming Jovanovich and Langmuir local behavior for the adsorbed phase, the total retention volume may be expressed as Laplace and generalized Stieltjes transforms, respectively. The utility of our theoretical considerations is demonstrated for the hexane-Polsorb C adsorption system.

Columns having a compact shape are highly desirable in liquid chromatography, allowing better and easier thermostatting. Packing a conventional high resolution liquid chromatography column in its straight configuration, followed by coiling, has not always resulted in a retention of efficiency. We have recently described a novel polymeric packing material, open-pore polyurethane, where high resolution-low pressure liquid chromatography columns are preparedin situ.These columns have been tested in their linear configuration and then coiled to a variety of coil sizes. Using 2.16 mm i.d. stainless steel tubes, coil diameters as small as 2 in. have been examined and no loss of efficiency was detected. This result has not been achieved before with conventional packings. Additionally, it has been shown that these columns may be coupled in series and the total number of theoretical plates may be calculated. This allows a high resolution series arrangement of columns with minimum column space requirements. This is generally not possible with conventional columns because of their high back-pressure.

摘要:
The effect of viscosity and temperature on the flux from a stirred ultrafiltration cell was studied. Fluxes of water, sucrose solutions, and sucrose solutions containing bovine serum (nonpermeating species) were measured at various temperatures. The effect of sucrose concentration and temperature on flux was explained by determining the effect of these two variables on the bulk viscosity and the diffusivity of the nonpermeating species, and then correlating flux by the equation Sh =A(Re)α(Sc)1/3, The flux at various temperatures could also be adequately estimated from changes in viscosity alone.

Foam separation techniques for the removal of cadmium and copper ions from aqueous solution were studied by employing a surfactant which was specifically designed to chelate with these ions. Relationships between the formation constants and surface tensions of solutions of Cd- and Cu-surfactant complexes on the selectivity of the removal of these ions were discussed.

The separation rates of precipitate flotation separations are calculated from a simple model and a more exact model based upon the Gouy-Chapman approach. The finite volume of the floc particles is taken into account, and the dependence of separation rates on ionic strength surface potential, charge of floc particles, and concentration of floc particles is determined.

摘要:
Radiochemical separation of carrier-free140La from140Ba has been performed by adsorbing the barium separately as sulfate and chromate in a powdered alumina column while lanthanum was eluted out. In both cases the adsorbed barium activity was later washed out with hot dilute nitric acid. Radiochemical purity of the separated lanthanum product was ascertained throughβ-decaystudies.
