&NA;Family caregivers begin to experience a variety of losses when a loved one develops Alzheimer's disease. Specific losses and accompanying grief must be understood by helping professionals in order to help families cope with this chronic disease. This article explains specific processes of anticipatory grief and mourning that family caregivers must complete in order to accommodate loss in a healthy way. The role of professionals in facilitating these processes is described.

摘要:
&NA;A major objective of the Chronic Care Networks for Alzheimer's Disease project is to involve and support family caregivers throughout the course of their relative's illness. The project model includes various approaches to achieve this objective, including innovative methods of involving family caregivers in the identification of people with possible dementia, initial assessment, and ongoing medical and non‐medical care management. Approaches and tools developed to implement the project model may be useful to other individuals and groups trying to create more coordinated and appropriate care for people with dementia and their family caregivers.

摘要:
&NA;Providing care to persons with dementia adversely affects the physical health of family caregivers. Physical complaints of family caregivers include low back pain, neck pain, arthritic knees, decreased general strength, and poor balance. This article describes the unique role of physical therapy in helping families minimize the physical burdens of caregiving that occur at the moderate to severe stages of dementia care. Physical therapy focuses on helping caregivers manage their aches and pains, prevent back and neck injuries, improve general strength and balance, and facilitate the safety and mobility of care recipients. An important aspect of the physical therapy intervention is helping caregivers incorporate exercise into daily routines.

摘要:
&NA;To date, much that has been written about ethics and Alzheimer's disease has focused on dilemmas with the central moral framework being some version of principlism. In contrast, this article focuses on the everyday moral questions that relate to essential moral needs—a sense of self that grounds meaning, self‐respect, and self‐esteem; the quality of the relationship between caregiver and care receiver; and the need to care for the caregiver. A case narrative introduces Mrs. Dodge and her daughter, Linda; an ethical framework that can guide thinking about these everyday concerns follows the narrative.

摘要:
&NA;Alzheimer's families rarely relinquish the caregiver role at the door of a residential or nursing care facility. Sadly, most families report little immediate “relief” when they admit a family member with Alzheimer's disease. For many families, it is their single most difficult transition. They experience helplessness, guilt, grief, anger, frustration, isolation, and sadness. Spouses and adult children, in particular, face complex and ambiguous challenges as they retain responsibility for what happens to a loved one while simultaneously losing control of daily life of a family member as a “resident.” How can staff help families through the difficult transition and adjustment? What are the advantages for staff, residents, and families when families “join” the care team? This article offers practical tips for successful staff‐family communication from moving in through visiting and end‐of‐life care.
