AbstractDarier's disease (keratosis follicularis) is a rare, dominantly inherited condition which is characterised by the presence of warty papules and plaques on the trunk, scalp and flexures. Diagnostic nail changes are present in most patients. Suprabasal clefting, acantholysis and dyskeratosis are present in involved skin and the diagnosis may be confirmed by a skin biopsy. The disease never remits. Exacerbating factors such as heat, sweating and ultraviolet light should be avoided. Topical therapy with emollients, moderately potent corticosteroids and antimicrobials may provide some symptomatic relief, but have no effect on the progress of the disease. Oral retinoids are effective in most patients. Complications such as cutaneous infections, blistering and salivary gland obstruction may occur in some patients.

AbstractThe recent success of vitamin D and its analogues in the treatment of psoriasis has generated extensive research into the role of vitamin D and calcium in this hyperproliferative skin disease. The objective of this study was to evaluate calcium and phosphorus levels in patients admitted to our dermatology service for treatment of severe psoriasis. The charts of 15 patients from 21 to 80 years of age were reviewed and admission laboratory data values recorded. Retrospective analysis of laboratory data from patients admitted with psoriasis demonstrated no abnormalities of calcium metabolism when assessed by calcium and phosphorus levels. Although vitamin D and its analogues appear to have a role in the treatment of psoriasis, this study suggests that a systemic aberration of calcium metabolism probably does not occur.

AbstractBecause of reports of sensitization and/or elicitation of contact allergy to orthopaedic metallic implants we performed a prospective study in 60 patients operated for extremity fractures. The implants, consisting of plates, screws, wires, pins and staples, were all made of stainless steel. The patients were tested epicutaneously and intracutaneously with nickel, cobalt and chromium within 2 days of surgery and one year later. It was possible to retest and evaluate 48 patients (80%). Of these 48 patients three were tested positive to nickel at the primary testing; they were also positive at the secondary testing. The remaining 45 patients were all negative to the three metals at both test occasions. There were no dermatologic or orthopaedic complications due to the materials used. The present prospective study did not reveal any cases of contact allergy or dermatitis as a consequence of metallic bioimplants in the treatment of extremity fractures.

Sixty‐two female sexual partners of men with anogenital warts.MethodsCervical cytology and colposcopy was performed on all patients. Biopsies were taken of colposcopically identified cervical epithelial abnormalities, Non‐HPV lower genital tract infection was detected by routine genito‐urinary screening. Demographic data and sexual history were obtained by questionnaire.Outcome measuredOverall prevalence of cervical epithelial abnormalities and correlation to the presence of non‐HPV lower genital tract infection in the female.ResultsThe overall prevalence of cervical epithelial abnormalities detected with colposcopy and biopsy was 46.8%.
