AbstractData from the Rand Health Insurance Experiment (HIE) are used in exploratory analyses to examine the associations of self‐reported dental health with general health measures. Responses of 1658 dentulous participants 18–61 yr of age are examined. Patterns of association among and between items of the physical, mental, social, and general health indices and a three‐item measure of self‐reported dental health are tested using principal component analyses. Findings suggest that dental health represents a separate dimension of health that is not fully accounted for by other health measures. However, while dental health may be considered an independent health construct, the denial health index was weakly but statistically significantly associated with the general health perceptions index and, to a lesser extent, to the menial health index and the two physical health indices. Improved self‐reported measures of denial health status, studied in association with other general health measures, will allow us to better define oral health, and patients perceptions of oral health, particularly in relation to other general health perceptions. In addition, a valid and reliable multidimensional oral health measure would be valuable as a potential cost‐effective method of epidemiologic data collection, as well us a tool for evaluating the effectiveness of oral health interventions, and for providing data for dental health policy making a

AbstractThe present study was part of the project “Health Behavior in Schoolchildren. A WHO Cross National Survey”. The distribution of eight dental health behaviors among Finnish. Norwegian, and Swedish schoolchildren aged 11. 13. and 15 yr was studied separately for boys and girls. The sample size approximated 3000 individuals for each country, and the samples are considered to be representative for whole countries. The distinction between individual and collective behavior was empirically supported in this study. Thus collective behaviors (supervised fluoride rinsing and distribution of fluoride tablets) did not vary according to sex but declined with increasing age. On the other hand, individual behaviors varied according to sex and tended to increase in frequency with increasing age. The levels of the studied dental health behaviors were different among the three countries. This may be related to country‐specific preventive policies as well as social and cultural

AbstractAs part of the comprehensive study “Health Behavior in Schoolchildren. A WHO Cross National Survey”, this paper set out to identify determinants of four dental health behavioral dimensions in Finnish. Norwegian, and Swedish schoolchildren aged 11, 13, and 15. The data were collected by means of self‐administered questionnaires, and the results are considered to be representative of each country. The total sample size approximated 3000 pupils in each country. The four dependent variables, fluoride, interdental cleaning, sugar, and brushing behavior, were all based upon sum‐scores of several questions, and were subsequently regressed upon five predictors: school achievement, sex, time spent with friends, educational plans, and family meal pattern. This model provided a far better fit to the data on sugar and brushing behavior than to fluoride and interdental cleaning behavior. However, brushing seems to be different from sugar behavior, being influenced by different factors. While brushing is closely linked to the prevailing sex‐role pattern, sugar behavior is stronger related to peer group norms. Thus, the symbolic function of sweet consumption of the youth culture should have implications for the design of intervention strategies. AbstractAs caries prevalence in some countries declines, and panel sizes for discriminating anti‐caries clinical trials inevitably increase, the need for participant pre‐selection grows to avoid escalating cost and manpower problems. Hence, retrospective analyses of data were undertaken, from a 3‐yr double‐blind caries clinical trial where a linear fluoride dose‐response had been obtained. As a result, it was demonstrated that the eruption status of permanent second molars, in 3005 participants aged 11–12 yr at outset, when coupled with their baseline clinical DMFT values, provided a sound basis for panellist size prediction without loss of sensitivity. Thus, had only those subjects with DMFT>4, with al least three of their permanent second molars erupted been selected following clinical baseline examination, the same sensitivity would have been achieved with 52% fewer subjects. AbstractThe aim of this study was to evaluate a treatment program designed to control occlusal caries on the basis of intensive patient education and professional tooth cleaning. The sample consisted of 56 6–8‐yr‐old children with their permanent right first molars in different stages of eruption. Data from the program were compared with previous data recorded in a similar sample of children. After 1 yr the majority of children in the study group had their permanent right first molars in full occlusion. A significant decrease of surfaces with easily detectable plaque and an increase of surfaces without plaque was observed. The proportion of arrested lesions increased and active enamel lesions decreased. Fissure sealing was only needed in two teeth in contrast to more than 2/3 of molars in a comparable sample of children. AbstractA double‐blind 3‐month anticalculus clinical study was conducted to determine the magnitude of the antitartar effect to be derived from use of a 0.5% zinc citrate dentifrice. From a population of 1600 subjects exhibiting calculus, 1210 subjects (age 18 and over) were selected and received a dental prophylaxis. The subjects were initially stratified on the basis of calculus score, age, and sex, then allocated randomly to a 3‐month usage period of one of two treatment groups. These were a dentifrice containing 0.5% zinc citrate or a control dentifrice without zinc citrate. Calculus was assessed using the Volpe‐Manhold Index. Oral soft tissue status was assessed throughout the course of the study. At the conclusion of the study 964 subjects had completed the trial: 486 using the zinc citrate dentifrice and 478 using the control. The results showed that the mean calculus scores in the group using the dentifrice containing zinc citrate were 13.7% lower than those of the group using the control dentifrice. AbstractThe prevalence of torus mandibularis was assessed in two groups of dental patients, altogether 2010 individuals over 10 yr of age: 1181 individuals native to the Lofoten Islands in North Norway, situated at 68° latitude; and 829 patients indigenous to Gudbrandsdal, an inland district in the southeastern part of the country at 61° latitude. Both groups were supposed to be of the same Caucasian stock and, therefore, to have similar genetic predisposition to torus on the average. The following observations were found: 1) the prevalence of torus mandibularis was much greater in Gudbrandsdal than in Lofoten (P<<0.001); 2) the prevalence decreased among persons above 50 yr of age as compared with those of the age classes 10–49 yr (P<0.01); and 3) it was smaller among women than men (P<0.05), mainly due to such a decrease in Lofoten. In a recent investigation of people living in Gudbrandsdal the fraction of the variation of torus that was attributable to genetic differences was estimated as about 30%, whereas approximately 70% of the causes seemed to be ascribable to environmental influences in terms of occlusal stress. It is suggested that dietary habits and number of existing teeth seemed to be environmental variables with an influence on the observed variation of torus prevalence between geographical regions, age classes, and sexes. AbstractThe caries prevalence, periodontal health, and oral hygiene status were assessed in 124 drug addicts aged 18–34 yr in Mercato San Severino (Salerno), Italy. The years of drug addiction ranged from 1 to 15 yr. The majority used heroin (96%) but all the subjects indicated that they had used more than one drug. The percentage of drug addicts caries Free was 6.5%, ranging From no caries Free subjects in the group over 29 yr of age, to 11.4% in the group aged 26–29 yr old. AbstractMusculoskeletal health was studied as part of a comprehensive health examination in 131 professionally active dentists. 42% of dentists had experienced pain and disability (interference with daily activities) by neck‐shoulder problems during the preceding year, with a tendency to greater prevalence in salaried dentists than in private practitioners. For the lower back, this percentage was 37. Somatic symptoms of stress, perceiving dentistry as physically too heavy or mentally too straining and a poorer general health status rating were all associated with a greater 1‐yr prevalence of neck‐shoulder and lower hack pain and disability and with poorer general physical fitness. Age, weekly work hours, working posture, use of an assistant, or radiographic degenerative changes in the dentist's skeleton were not associated with l‐yr prevalence of neck‐shoulder or lower back pain and disability. AbstractThe aim of this investigation was to explore the relative importance of psychologic variables in explaining the degree of denture satisfaction in full denture patients. A group of 125 patients who were on a waiting list to have new dentures constructed participated in this study. The patients completed the Dutch version of the Hopkins Symptom Checklist, the Dutch Personality Inventory, a denture satisfaction questionnaire and a denture complaint questionnaire. No relation was found between the personality variables and denture satisfaction as measured by the denture satisfaction questionnaire. When the different aspects of denture satisfaction were measured by means of complaint scales, satisfaction was related to personality traits. Functional complaints of the mandibular denture and complaints about a hollow face were related to the personality trait “extraversion‐introversion”.
