摘要:
The simple truth is that ambition and integrity are no more mutually exclusive than wit and wisdom. The problem, which for some is almost insurmountable, is to get beyond the psychosocial detritus surrounding the idea of success and the character of the successful. It is essential for those driven to succeed to understand thathowone gets there is more important than the arriving;it is, in fact, the arriving! As for those who are uncomfortable with the whole process, they must learn and relearn that no one is corruptible unless they let themselves be corrupted.

摘要:
Building a career of depth and breadth is lifelong work. While conscious forethought and planning is important, even more critical is the courage to take risks and to continually “push the envelope” in terms of skill development. Active intrapreneurs find opportunities to create change and innovation in their organizations and personally benefit from an increased repertoire of marketable skills. In today's health care environment, middle management and executive positions are being consolidated and even eliminated, making it more difficult for upward mobility in the organization. Intrapreneurship offers a way to develop marketable career skills and creates visibility for the individual.

摘要:
Understanding employees' beliefs, attitudes, and values about the world and the workplace can assist a manager in more effectively communicating with and coaching employees. One of the factors that influence an employee's perception of work is the generation in which they were born. The workforce today is composed of three distinct generational cohorts. The termgenerational cohortrefers to people born in the same general time span who share key life experiences, which include demographic trends, historical events, public heroes, entertainment pastimes, and early work experiences.1These common life experiences create cohesiveness in perspectives and attitudes and define the unspoken assumptions of the generation. As a result, employees of different age groups do not share the same work ethic or expectations. Certainly, each human being is an individual. However, understanding generational experiences and perspectives and learning to coach individuals from different age groups are becoming essential management skills.

摘要:
Continuing competence is a critical issue for the public and the nursing profession. This article presents the key elements of a successful continuing competence program, from setting out a clear purpose through evaluation. Tools to support continuing competence requirements are also discussed. Specifically, a self-assessment tool and a professional profile developed by a Canadian regulatory body as a means for nurses to demonstrate continuous learning and professional growth will be described. Organizational attributes that support quality professional practice are outlined as a foundation for a successful continuing competence program. This blueprint will assist nursing leaders, practitioners, educators, and regulators to successfully design and implement a comprehensive program to enhance competence and continued professional growth in an environment of change and challenge.

摘要:
The six-year exploration of competency by the Kentucky Board of Nursing and a number of stakeholders resulted in enactment of a change to the Kentucky nursing laws that refocused continued competency from mandatory continuing education to multiple validation options. Many questions are yet unanswered as the new continued competency validation strategies are implemented for 2001 Kentucky nurse licensure renewal.

摘要:
The first state board of nursing came into being in 1903. It was not until about 1980, however, that the last state passed legislation mandating licensure for all RNs. Traditionally, RNs had been licensed to practice only within their state licensure and were required to be re-licensed for every other state in which they wished to practice. This article examines multistate licensure and how this practice will open up wider opportunities for today's registered nurses.

摘要:
High rates of turnover among nursing home staff are well documented, especially among nursing assistants who provide 80 percent to 90 percent of the direct care to residents. High staff turnover significantly and negatively impacts a nursing home's ability to provide high-quality care. Current organizational theory and empirical evidence suggest that a supportive workplace promotes satisfaction and retention of workers. A model of staff support in the nursing home is proposed that conceptualizes the nursing home as a supportive social system in which the needs of both staff and residents can be better met.

摘要:
Change is everywhere. Some is good, some is not. Some is fun, some is not. The original development of primary nursing was a transformational change process that was almost transcendental in nature. The impact of it was so powerful, it informed the rest of my life, my career, and the careers of hundreds of thousands of nurses. From a staff-driven change on a single unit, primary nursing has become a global movement. It is viewed by nurse leaders around the world as a viable means to strengthening the role of the bedside staff nurse. It is a change that can be made from within the profession. One that does not require a doctor's or administrator's permission.

摘要:
Nursing is a dynamic and exciting profession. The future of practice is built on the shoulders of those who have gone before and laid firm foundations upon which to construct the future. One person's career is simply a small part of the complex of variables that contribute to the growth and success of the profession. However, it is precisely this commitment, energy, and contribution that assure a viable and meaningful future and every nurse is called to add his or her individual gifts to its creation.
