摘要:
SUMMARY.Interviewing children and parents has been the subject of much controversy in recent years, with particular concern about techniques used. In this paper, the author takes a fundamental look at the philosophies and psychological assumptions which underlay much current interviewing practice. He identifies this as being primarily based on a cognitive neutral stance from the interviewer. These assumptions are questioned, particularly in relation to working with people from different cultures where different assumptions prevail. The article ends with some recommendations for improving interviewing approaches.

SUMMARY.This article outlines a study of the inter‐relationship between children's understanding of the motives for people working, the factors which determine their pay and the reasons and consequences of losing a job. SUMMARY.This article takes further the themes outlined in Children&Society, Volume 3(1) of examining the practices of special foster and residential caregivers in terms of the management of daily and other recurrent social events, and the methods used by caregivers to control children. Data are also presented on the role activities of caregivers and their interactions with children. Care practice in the special foster homes was generally found to be significantly more child‐oriented than in the children's homes, and possible explanations for this are considered. Evidence is presented which serves to counter the tendency, in the wake of recent controversy surrounding children's homes, to scapegoat caregivers and children for shortcomings in residential care. SUMMARY.The authors argue in this paper that the dominance of legal and professional approaches that individualise and pathologise child abuse has left welfare workers ill‐equipped to respond to the emergent interest in parent's and children's rights. They suggest that such approaches fail to take adequate account of inequalities based on class, gender and race and the socially‐constructed aspects of adult‐child relationships. SUMMARY.This is the first of two papers extracted from a recent study into the historical development of the care and education of deprived children in Britain. Using a case study approach, the research sought to identify some of the less overt influences which shaped and often limited the type of provision as it emerged over a period which extends as far back as the middle ages. Emphasis is placed on the part played by social and economic self‐interests in shaping the policy and practices as they developed. Exploration of eighteenth century provision led to discovery of records left by Catharine Cappe, a remarkable social reformer. Her experience provides insight in methods of working with young people and in the development of institutions to cater for their needs.
