AbstractData relating to the natural moisture‐content of samples of saturated fine‐grained sediments, ranging from Devonian to Recent, are assembled and discussed. They indicate that the voids occupy volumes proportionally much greater than those shown by published figures for porosity obtained by standard displacement methods. Void‐ratio/pressure (depth) relationships and formulae devised to facilitate prediction are thus likely to need revision.The natural moisture‐content varies with the predominance of particular clay‐minerals, as well as with grading. The special cases of calcareous muds, organic muds, varves and boulder clays (tills), are discussed, together with geological implications of the further study of moisture

AbstractThe Caledonian structures of North Wales were foreshadowed by Pre‐Cambrian structures. A feature of the Caledonian pattern is a deflection of cleavage and fold trends from north‐south, as in Merionethshire, to east‐west, as in Denbighshire. The axis of this deflection trends northwest—southeast from Shropshire to Anglesey; it appears to be wrenched sinistrally along the Bala fault. The vergence of cleavage and folds is generally towards the east and south. Intensity of deformation increases from the foreland (Shropshire) to Anglesey. Late‐Caledonian granite and dolerites are discussed in relation to deformation. Post‐Caledonian events are brief

AbstractA collection of Middle Viséan nantiloids from the Isle of Man is described, together with two specimens from beds probably of the same age in Derbyshire. The generaVestinautilusde Ryckholt,StrobocerasHyatt, andDomatocerasHyatt are more closely defined on the basis of their type‐species, and the opportunity is taken to refigure the types ofStroboceras hartti(Dawson) andDomatoceras umbilicatumHyatt.
