SummaryThis paper is an exposition of some elements of Wald's decision theory. Concepts like a priori distribution, decision function, loss function, risk, Bayes procedures, admissible procedures, minimax procedures, least favourable distribution are introduced all in connection with the problem of classification of observations into two given populations. The exact treatment of the procedures and their mutual relations are illustrated by numerical examples concerning univariate and multivariate normal populations. The extension towards the classification into more than two given populations concludes the paper.

SamenvattingDe vraag naar de nauwkeurigste (d.i. kleinste tweede moment) schatter van de restvariantie a2bij lineaire regressieanalyse met isomore onafhankelijke normaal verdeelde residuen wordt opnieuw beantwoord, maar longs vrijwel geheel andere weg dan door THEIL en SCHWEITZER [3] bewandeld. Het blijkt bovendien dat deling van de residuele som van kwadraten door het bijbehorende aantal vrijheids‐graden + 2 niet alleen in de klasse der kwadratische funk ties der waarnemingen maar zelfs in de klasse van alle veelvouden van zuivere schattingen van σ2de nauwkeurigste is. Gebruik wordt gemaakt van de in een appendix bewezen stelling, dat de traditionele schatter van σ2, waarbij de residuele som van kwadraten door het bijbehorend aantal vrijheidsgraden wordt gedeeld, de nauwkeurigste is onder alle zuivere schatt

SamenvattingDe conjunctuurtest is opgezet met het doel op korte termijn inzicht te verkrijgen in de bewegingen van belangrijke economische variabelen. Daartoe worden de ondernemers vragen gesteld d.m.v. een enqueteformulier omtrent grootheden als productie, afzet etc. De conjunctuurtest laat slechts 3 antwoorden toe: de variabele in kwestie is gestegen, gelijk gebleven of gedaald. Bij dit soort analyses bestaat onzekerheid over de vraag hoe een ondernemer het antwoord “geen verandering” zal interpreteren. Dit probleem is als volgt aangepakt. Voor de ondernemers zijn gespecificeerd de “response functions” p(δ) en q(δ). De functie p(δ) geeft aan de kans dat een ondernemer een stijging zal melden indien hij met een numerieke productie verandering 6 wordt geconfronteerd. De functie q(δ) geeft aan de kans dat hij een doling zal melden bij eenzelfde productieverandering δ. Vervolgens zijn voor de waargenomen productie wijzigingen in de chemische Industrie over de periode januari 1955t/mdecember 1957 de waarschijnlijkheden van de meldingen “stijging” p(δ) en “daling” q(δ) bepaald. Hierna zijn met behulp van een computer de antwoorden van de ondernemers gesimuleerd. Zie voor deze techniek sectie 4.Met behulp van de regressie analyse is vervolgens de samenhang onderzocht tussen de conjunctuurtestgegevens en de productiecijfers van traditionele statistiek. SummaryProgramming the production of dwellings in the NetherlandsProgramming for a year the building of dwellings in the Netherlands is treated by linear programming. Restrictions are introduced for man‐power, material, private capital, subsidies and foreign currency.A “program” consists of two numbers, S (number of dwellings to be built with governmental subsidies) and V (number of dwellings to be built in the free market).The objective is discussed at length. With the returning to normal conditions in building, S‐dwellings will be subject to a higher rate of depreciation than V‐dwell‐ings.A purely quantitative objective for the program is rejected in favour of a qualitative one: maximizing the value which the dwellings built in this year will possess, say, in 1975.A simple graphical solution is shown, and the effect on the program of the industrialization of building i
