Summary The paper deals with the type I error probabilities when a single outlier test is applied repeatedly to a sample. In the case in which multiple outliers are present, expressions for the power loss due to masking are derived.

Summary It is well known that for a bivariate density in order to be bivariate normal, the possession of univariate normal marginal densities alone is not sufficient. In this paper it will be shown by means of some counterexamples that the additional requirement of linearity of the regression functions does not supply a sufficient condition either.

SummaryGiven two random samplesX1X2XnXandY1, Y2Ynya “pair chart” is constructed as follows.Draw a rectangle of widthnXunits and heightnyunits. Starting from its lower left comer, draw a line one unit to the right (upwards) if the smallest observation in the combined samples is anX(a Y).Then, starting from the end of this line, draw another to the right (upwards) if the second smallest observation is anX (a Y).Continue through the largest observation, thus producing a path to the upper right comer of the rectangle.The paper explains how such a chart can be interpreted as a descriptive tool in comparing the two samples.There are figures which illustrate the typical effects on pair charts of differences between the underlying populations in location, scale, and shape.It is also shown how the pair chart can be used as an aid in calculating and interpreting various nonparametric procedures for the two‐sample problem These include: the one‐ and two‐ sided Kolmogorov‐Smirnovtests; the Wald‐Wolfowitzruns test; the Wilcoxon‐Mann‐Whitneytest; Sukhatme'stest for scale differences given both medians known; the Ansari‐Bradleyscale test; Mood'ssquared‐rank test, and the Crouse‐Steffensmodification of it; and Lehmann'stwo‐sample test. SummaryThis paper presents a generalization of the logistic growth function based on a model for relative growth rates. The basic relative growth rate model is based on the Riccati differential equation, which has a solution that closely resembles the familiarS‐shaped logistic curve.
