摘要:
Sir Howard Middlemiss, Emeritus Professor of Radiodiagnosis in the University of Bristol, died suddenly at his home on 27th April 1983 a few days before his 67th birthday.John Howard Middlemiss, always affectionately known as Howard, was a north countryman. He was educated at Repton School and in the Medical School of the University of Durham at Newcastle from which he qualified in 1940.

摘要:
AbstractA simple definition and classification of intracranial cysts and porencephaly is difficult, if not impossible. A working ultrasonic classification for CSF-containing cysts is provided, based on their character and geography. Five cases of differing CSF-containing cysts in the neonatal head are discussed, with correlated ultrasound and computed tomographic studies.

摘要:
This is without question the most comprehensive review of the advances and management of Hirschsprung's disease since Ehrenpreis' “Hirschsprung's Disease,” 1920. These two books are essential reading for those involved in the care of patients (children and adults) with Hirschsprung's disease and the related conditions. Holschneider and his co-authors have put forward the current ideas, relating advances in the small muscle physiology and the developmental anatomy with a clear critical assessment of the modern trends in management. The illustrations and photographs are of high standard and help to explain the difference between the types of operations used with great clarity.

摘要:
AbstractThe ultrasonic findings in a case of small bowel intussusception in an adult patient are presented. The sonographic features vary with the scanning plane. Scans along the longitudinal axis of the involved segment show a diagnostic pattern, not previously described: three parallel stripes of low echogenicity delineating two reflective areas.

摘要:
This text covers a wide range of topics, from the basic physics of ultrasound through clinical applications to safety regulations and guidelines. It takes in diagnostic, therapeutic and surgical techiques. The standard of presentation of the material is high throughout the text and each chapter is very readable. Chapters 1 and 3 describe the basic physics of ultrasound and measurement of field parameters.

摘要:
There have been many advances in nuclear medicine since the first edition of this book appeared in 1976 (reviewed inBritish Journal of Radiology, 1978,51, 621), and these are reflected in the major changes in the second edition. The chapter on radiopharmaceuticals has been expanded and an extra chapter has been added in order to give more attention to the gamma camera, including the use of digital computers to record and analyse images.

摘要:
AbstractUltrasound is now widely used to demonstrate the presence of gall-stones in the gall bladder and common bile duct in jaundiced patients. The ultrasound appearance of gall-stones is characteristic and consists of strong, bright reflections with shadowing distally, though stones smaller than 3 or 4 mm may not always show shadowing. We report our experience with large common bile duct stones which do not show the characteristic features of gall-stones and so may be misdiagnosed as tumour masses. The possible reasons for these appearances are discussed.

摘要:
Doctors Bartrum and Crow have updated their 1977 book, entitled “Grey Scale Ultrasound: A Manual for Physicians and Technical Personnel” to this current book, which stresses their conversion to real time ultrasound. Their writing style remains simple and lighthearted. Certainly the scan quality has dramatically improved over the first edition, although the machine used by them is no longer in commercial production. The scans are predominantly white on black, with a few reversals.

摘要:
AbstractWe assessed the nephrotoxicity of ionic and non-ionic radiocontrast material (CM) in two groups of patients in a prospective study. One group of 25 potential live kidney donors was studied following conventional renal angiography, carried out as part of the routine pre-operative assessment. The other group of 49 renal transplant patients with varying degrees of renal impairment was studied following digital vascular imaging carried out for investigation of hypertension. Plasma creatine, urinary N-acetyl-D-glucosaminidase (NAG), urinary microglobulin (B2M) and urinary protein excretion were measured before and after the imaging procedure. There were no significant changes in these parameters following digital vascular imaging, but there were increases in plasma creatinine (p<0.005) and urinary NAG creatinine ratio (p<0.002) in the conventional angiography group following the procedure. Substantial proteinuria developed in 35% of patients following conventional angiography. The differences in nephrotoxicity of radiocontrast agents during the two procedures could not be accounted for by the dose of material used, but probably reflect the effect of differences in the route of administration on the maximal concentration of the material reaching the kidney. Non-ionic radiocontrast material proved less toxic than ionic and may be preferable in conventional angiography.

摘要:
According to the author “the purpose of this book is to acquaint medical specialists with the possibilities offered by angiography for diagnosis of disturbed circulation of the arm and hand. Three general areas are covered: radiological methods of examination, vascular anatomy, and clinical and angiographic aspects of the most common pathological processes involving the upper extremity.”
